NRC chief tours Cooper plant (Fort Calhoun tomorrow)

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110626/NEWS01/110629764#nrc-chief-tours-cooper-plant

Published Sunday June 26, 2011

On Sunday, the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission began a two day tour of Nebraska's flood-threatened nuclear reactors.

He will tour Fort Calhoun on Monday but on Sunday he got a close-up look at safety measures in place at Cooper Nuclear Station.

He said he will know more about the situation at Fort Calhoun on Monday after touring the plant.

"I would say that (the Aqua Dam) was more of an additional enhancement they had added to the site to make it easier to deal with flooding levels, but it was not a specifically safety-related piece of equipment. Ultimately there are other systems and structures in the plant that can insure that it can continue operating safely with the rising flood waters."

3. For the record the NRC is present at these plants at all times
so a low level Technical group would not alarm me. The head of the NRC, on the other hand... best case scenario somebody has pointed out that as the waters recede dry casks might float away.... yes they are heavy... flood waters are that strong. That is the best case... they might be worried about losing control of the nuclear material... and that is a very valid concern.

Like the NRC is looking out for our health and safety or to start the ass covering and damage control?

The idea of spent fuel rod containing casks floating on top of flood waters sounds like a horror movie. Something that's not supposed to happen and yet another nuclear worse case scenario that wasn't planned for?

The no fly-zone and lack of media coverage, although I've been noticing a few stories here and there, any activity in or around that plant is unnerving and seems those in charge have something to hide.

Whatever - I'm just done with the world's nuclear fetish. There's got to be a better way.

Edit to fix typo.

8. Please. Those casks weigh in excess of 60,000 pounds.
They aren't going to "float away."
