Republican Dark Horse is . . . Michele Bachmann
The 2012 GOP presidential nomination will go to a dark horse candidate because leading contender Mitt Romney has too many enemies. He's a Mormon, which means Southern Baptists won't vote for him. He's also open to the accusation that he's a liberal, based on the similarity between Massachusetts Romney-care and Obamacare. These issues are based more on perception than reality, but they will cost him the support he needs to win.

Michele Bachmann doesn't have similar negatives that alienate Republican voters. While the positions she's taken are certainly anathema to Democrats, they don't generate fierce opposition within her own party. And unlike other Republican candidates, Bachmann has a devoted following eager to send money.

"Bachmann’s accounts are ... filled with small contributions sent by devoted supporters. Many small donors meet her through television or Internet clips, and she stays connected with them through a well-honed system of phone calls, e-mails, and letters.

"Each gets a personalized “Team Bachmann’’ membership card. The most recent bears her picture and a motto: “Fighting for common sense and fiscal sanity in Washington.’’

1. Bachmann is a HAG: Malicious, vicious and repulsive!
She clings to the failed policies of the republican party and would continue the downward trend of workers in America. There is not a common sense bone in her body. It is pure ambition and lust for power. She is driven, and that makes her dangerous for our country and our democracy. She has no qualms whatsoever about spreading hatred, racism, and McCarthyite accusations of anti americanism against anyone who gets in her way. She is vulnerable, and she needs to be knocked out of the race early.

as I have said before, what better contender to the black Obama than a white woman. The media will salivate in support of her.

...all they need is a figurehead to be a cheerleader for the party.

Corporate America and its minions will handle the actual running of the country.

5. Republican Campaign
Nobody should be surprised that a Republican nominee will run a Republican-style campaign. It's the kind of thing they do, y'know. Democrats can expect attacks on our patriotism. Good Lord, haven't we learned anything?

8. I thought the same thing
about Ronald Reagan and I still haven't gotten over that Palin made it as far as the Vice Presidential slot in a national campaign. This is America. Anything can happen and apparently anyone can get elected. I stopped laughing about seemingly wacko politicians a long time ago.

17. I sort of discount Dubya,
the worst president of my life, because I don't believe he was actually elected the first time. He was installed by the Supreme Court after serious electoral shenanigans in FL and elsewhere. Nonetheless, your point is well taken and hard to argue with.

29. American Elections are NOT Ideological
Americans can't be bothered with ideology; it's too much work. So they take from Column A and from Column B as it suits them. Reagan got away with claiming that cutting taxes increases government revenue; in fact we still hear that nonsense.

Along comes Michele Bachmann with a handful of Austrian economic slogans. It won't make a difference that an economic system has to be in balance. Her supporters will take from Column A and from Column B as it suits them.

It's completely American. Democrats who dismiss Bachmann as batshit crazy are just whistling in the dark.

24. Michele Bachmann is DANGEROUS!!!
Don't underestimate her. She's a conniving, manipulative bitch.

And she exploits the fact that liberals laugh at her - that's how she drums up support from her fundie redneck base.

something stupid). But I think independants will reject her.

32. Austrian Economics
The principles of Austrian economics sound very strange the first couple of times you hear them. But people who buy into this school of thought aren't crazy at all. That's why this Bachmann-is-crazy meme is going to fail.

The world economy is in bad shape. We should not dismiss new ideas simply because they're unfamiliar.

27. Austrian Economics
Bachmann is a follower of Ludwig von Mises, the founder of the Austrian school of economics. Much of what he says sounds strange but it's not bat shit crazy. We're looking at devastation caused by whatever economic theory prevails at the moment. Voters may be willing to consider an alternative.

16. It wouldn't bother me a bit if she were to be the Republican Nominee
I'm not going to vote for a Republican no matter who they run, so its just a matter of amusement for me to see who they run. She is an easily beaten candidate, and I want to see the Republicans beat. So sure, bring her on!

30. Easily Beaten Candidate
With unemployment so high, any Republican is a threat. Michele Bachmann shouldn't be dismissed as easily beaten, especially because her involvement with Austrian economics will be reported as original thinking. She'll come out with some idea from the 1940's and the press will be fascinated.

I hope she's the GOP nominee. Obama's win next year will be similar to Reagan's victory over Mondale or Nixon over McGovern.

26. Ten Percent Unemployment
Obama may win re-election, but with 10% unemployment he's not going to coast to an easy victory. The state of the economy weighs very heavily on the minds of voters. As things stand, Obama is anything but a shoo-in for a second term.

Republicans tried this another planet strategy against Obama because of his strange name and the fact that he seemed to come out of nowhere. It didn't work.
