Gillibrand: Our Next Marriage Equality Fight: Repealing DOMA
Source: Huffington Post

What a historic day!

(snip)

But our work is not done.

The fact is that once our LGBT friends and family are legally able to marry here in New York, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) will prohibit them from enjoying over 1,000 federal rights and privileges that are afforded straight married couples.

That's why earlier this year I joined Senator Feinstein and several of my Senate colleagues to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, a bill that will repeal the regressive and discriminatory DOMA.

It's also why I've joined with Democracy For America to launch a national online campaign to rally support for repeal. For only once every legally married couple in the United States is treated equally under federal law can we fulfill the true meaning of marriage equality.

2. Gillibrand is SO good on this issue
I was suspicious of her when she was appointed. I was wrong. She's like a freaking superhero.

against her. Her democratic roots are deep, her family is steeped in politics and public service. I live well out of her state, but view her as the best hope for the first female US President. Gillibrand is smart, tough and savvy.

3. Pay attention DUERs. You likely read a position statement from the
first female US President.

really glad she prevailed over Caroline Kennedy.

Not being a millionaire helps me like her even more.

7. So proud that Gillibrand is my Senator.
I admit to being skeptical of her when Patterson first appointed her, but she's turned out to be one of the best Senators we've ever had in this state. We could use more like her in DC.

9. Me too, I was worried by her claim to be a Blue Dog. But she has
been a very pleasant surprise. I guess Patterson knew what he was doing :)

10. Too bad we couldn't have seen our congresscritters
with enough courage to do this in the first two years of the Obama presidency. It's easy to put forth all kinds of 'courageous' legislation when you know it has zero chance of even being a part of the horse trading that the NY marriage equality bill was surely involved in.
