I was just watching Janeane Garofalo on Keith's show just now and I just kept thinking about something she said on Bill Mahr's show recently that kind of ticked me off.
First of all, I teach government at a local community college and I stress critical thinking.
The topic was taxation. J.G. made a statement that those who call for tax cuts are non-critical thinkers because they don't think about the consequences. I don't think that is true in every case - critical thinking does not always lead to a correct conclusion - but, her point was well taken and, for the most part. is probably spot on. I was glad to hear here make the statement.
Later the topic turned to presidential elections and our poor turnouts, etc. The point was being made that people should vote. She said then that some people don't vote because they don't like either candidate, implying that was understandable/ok.
She was quick to label tax cutters as non-critical thinkers because they don't think of the consequences. That logic applies to people who don't vote because they don't like either candidate.
Nobody said that democracy was easy. Some, if not most, of the choices we have to make in life are not easy - in fact, the suck - but they are still choices we have to make. The same is true of our elections.
As Rusell Crowe said in the movie Master and Commander, sometimes we have to "choose the lesser of two weevils."
That is all.
