Danish police proposal: Ban anonymous Internet use
Cory Doctorow at 3:08 AM Thursday, Jun 23, 2011

The Danish police had proposed abolishing all anonymous Internet access, under the rubric of fighting terrorism. ISPs and companies would be required to gather strong proof of identity (official ID cards and similar) before connecting users, and would be required to retain records.

Thus, a working group at the Ministry of Justice started with a recommendation to parliament that would require all persons on the open Internet connections from such libraries and the café's wireless network, identify with a personal code for being able to get online.
The idea is that the police or the police intelligence service, with data from the open network connections will be able to investigate terrorism more effectively when the police can see who is logged on to the open network and not least, what sites network users have visited and whom they interacted with.

1. I wonder if Danish cops
hate being filmed as much as American cops? Funny how so many police agencies love to be able to do what they want to people presumed to be innocent but really don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot.

4. No shortage of facists in the nether regions.
I think the majority's insistence on a liberal society has created a strong minority of racists, fascists, religious fundamentalists and all the other fun groups.

2. I don't have a problem with that. I think FB's facial recognition software
is far more concerning.

3. Really?
Facial recognition software is bad but this idea is worse IMO. You would have to prove that it's you signing onto your account and leaving your footprints on every webpage, popup, discussion board etc for the cops today, maybe the State Department or IRS tomorrow to take a peek at.

5. If you have internet at home everything you do on line is traceable.
Using internet cafes and libraries is a way to avoid that. Why have that loophole?

6. It's not traceable if you know what you're doing.
At least I don't have to log on using a secure card and my tracks are easy to cover up. I don't consider having internet cafes and libraries loopholes either they're nice secure places that keep big brother the hell away from me.

7. It would get rid of the trolls, at least
A friend of mine coined this little saying: "Anonymity plus internet access = asshole."

10. And it would help the RW track down and harass critics.
They'll love it.

Big Brother Police State.

The Nazis and other totalitarians would have loved to have had something like this available to them. Imagine what the former Egyptian or current Syrian regimes could do with it.

13. Run an open AP? Go to jail!
Got to get rid of all of those creepy terrorists and their scary beliefs about "personal freedom" and "rights". If we let beliefs like that continue, it just might undermine the peoples faith in the security state! What good is "freedom" if the guy down the street is reading Wikileaks?!?! We can't allow that kind of thing to continue!
