WOW! Football AND a loving tribute to the GIPPER? Super Bowl XLV plans Saint Ronnie tribute.

On Sunday, February 6, 2011, the world will turn its eyes to Arlington, TX for Super Bowl XLV, to be held at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium.

February 6 is also notable for another "cowboy" - this one, an actor-turned-President. February 6, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of this nation's 40th President, Ronald Reagan.

Tributes are being planned across the country as well as around the world, even in countries of the former Soviet bloc described famously by Reagan as an "Evil Empire" in 1983, at the height of the Cold War. The fall of the Soviet regime is largely credited to the actions Reagan took, both foreign and domestic, to spur the American economy while forcing the U.S.S.R. and Soviet bloc to destabilize and eventually fall, being rebuilt for the most part into Western-inspired republics.

A tribute is being planned as part of the Super Bowl festivities in Texas, though specific details are largely being kept under wraps at the moment.

Other plans to mark the Feb. 6, 1911, birth of Reagan in Tampico, Ill., are coalescing around the globe. Today, the National Archives has opened an exhibit in Washington of memorabilia concerning Reagan’s foreign policy and plans to host several other exhibits during the years, the Post reported. The U.S. Postal Service will release a postage stamp on Feb. 10, and a joint session of Congress is planned.

I don't think I could get through it without a case of Pepto Bismol. :puke:

5. I didn't think it could get worse than having the Black Eyed Peas do halftime
Edited on Fri Jan-07-11 10:37 PM by Rage for Order
I was obviously mistaken. I'll still watch the game, but I'm definitely finding something else to do for 20 minutes at halftime.

6. Haven't Kid Rock and Britney Spears also played previous SuperBowls?

Trust me, it can go lower than the Black Eyed Peas.

9. I've always thought the music should match the sport
Making heavy metal bands the music of choice for football halftime shows - Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, iron Maiden....the list could go on and on.

14. Since Priest is doing their "Epitaph" Farewell Tour this year...
...it should have been them. Giving them a high-profile spot like that would have been cool indeed.

24. I think it should reflect the audience....I'm a football fan, and don't like heavy metal.

That's why I think they need to mix the halftime entertainment up.

10. OMG...are they really going to have them play? I'd rather Tiny Tim sing..
"Tiptoe thru the tulips" naked than endure the black-eyed piss.
They're about as original as a dog's rectum.

15. Will they have mock ups of the missles he gave to Iran?
Maybe Ollie North could do a reenactment of stuffing damning documents representing evidence into his female aides boots. Maybe he could use one of the cheerleaders.

Someone posted a photo of that float on DU the other day from the back angle, a front-on view of the ugly-assed brown statue that looks like it's made out of chopped liver. I saw the one black & white photo behind it...I didn't realize they wrapped all around the side. That makes it look even more hideous. There is a deep, deep, unhealthy obsession with remembering this man for what he was not...

...I mean, I'm an Elvis fan...but I remember him for what he was, warts and all, not some ridiculously fictionalized, idealized, Madame Tussaud's wax action figure of a "man."

22. President Obama gets virulently criticized for calling into locker rooms after big games.
But the President that started the practice was Ronald Reagan in a call to the victorious coach Bill Walsh after Walsh's 49ers won their second or third Super Bowl. Reagan continued the practice for all championships, including NCAA championships. Reagan was also the first President to have victorious sports teams visit the White House. All Presidents since have followed the practices.

Don't get your undies twisted out of shape over the SB special, it seems a way of the NFL recognizing Presidents for calling their victorious SB coaches and for those Presidents giving notice to the big game. The special also sort of serves notice to the right-wing that their hero started the practice of calling into locker rooms and that President Obama is just continuing that practice.
