Sgt. Major of the Marines on DADT: "How dare we..."
“How dare we, then, exclude a group of people who want to do the same thing you do right now, something that is honorable and noble?” Sgt. Maj. Barrett continued, raising his voice just a notch. “Right?”

Straight Talk From Top Enlisted Marine on ‘Don’t Ask’ Repeal

June 21, 2011, 7:00 AM ET

By Nathan Hodge

The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, the service’s top non-commissioned officer, is supposed to be tough, hard-charging — and more than a little intimidating.

In that respect, Sgt. Maj. Micheal Barrett, recently selected to be the senior enlisted adviser to Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos, fits the bill. Sgt. Maj. Barrett has a long military resume, including combat service in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he doesn’t need a microphone to get his point across.

<snip>

“Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution is pretty simple,” he told a group of Marines at a base in South Korea. “It says, ‘Raise an army.’ It says absolutely nothing about race, color, creed, sexual orientation.

<snip>

“How dare we, then, exclude a group of people who want to do the same thing you do right now, something that is honorable and noble?” Sgt. Maj. Barrett continued, raising his voice just a notch. “Right?”

19. You'd think it would be obvious, right?
Some people...

I remember a few months ago I made a post about telling my kid about our gay neighbors. It got a brazillion recs, and it was just some common sense.

My six-year-old didn't care a whit about it.

3. I don't know if this is a repeat. I didn't see it on here before...
...but I've been busy IRL.

Slight apologies if it's a dupe.

5. I image after Sgt. Major yells "Right" a chorus of voices answered back "Right"-
whether they liked it or not.

Good.

6. Strange that the Murdoch Journal would run such a thing
Has the right wing decided that the president's cowardice on repealing DADT can be used against him?

11. True enough, but it's a good way to get his attention
On the other, that attention could be intense.

13. considering the number of closet case marines, the marines better adjust.....
how many marines join up because they secretly hope that doing that will get rid of their "gay" issue and make them a "real" man?
quite a few I would think.

22. I bet there's a perpetual percentage...
...that was practically forced into the military by homophobic parents.

Of course, these are the same people that think all lesbians need is a good gang rape to make them straight again. :eyes: :puke:

16. In the final analysis.....
military people are practical people. They have to be.

The endless wars are turning people off on military careeres. If they exclude 15% of the population based on BS reasons, they can't make their personel quotas, even after they lower the entrance qualifications.

18. Good point and very true.
When the draft was eliminated, most of the restrictions on service women disappeared like snow in spring. Same song, different verse.
