Speed limit raised to 75 mph on 807 miles of Kansas highways

snip

But highway safety advocates warned that increasing the speed limit would only reverse the declining trend in highway deaths that Kansas has experienced the last several years.

State Rep. Paul Davis, for one, doesn’t accept the economic development argument.

“I don’t buy that at all,” said Davis, a Lawrence Democrat and a House minority leader.

“I don’t think people are making decisions on what state they’re going to drive through based on what the speed limit is. All the data I have seen shows when you allow people to drive faster, you’re going to have more accidents and more fatalities.”

1. That's ok if you don't lose federal highway funds. It's not a reckless speed.

2. Here in Chicago,
if you get on one of the expressways and are doing less than 70, your a dead man. The speed limits are generally 55-65 but no one does the speed limit.

10. GN, TN, MI and IL are all that way
a super low speed limit, and everyone's driving 70+. What's annoying about that is that a cop can single out pretty much whomever they please, because everyone is speeding.

11. Generally they pull over who ever is going fastest
Theres a saying my my family, "You can drive as fast as you want, as long as your driving slower then the fastest guy."

3. 75 miles per hour
from Denver to Topeka is reasonable I believe. Ever drive that route?

28. Totally agree -
anything less that 75 or 80 puts you to sleep.

4. Good news.
And Davis, we could just reduce the speed limit to zero to avoid traffic deaths. What a blowhard.

12. Actually he's not a blowhard at all
He's a great progressive Democrat who spoke out often and loudly during this past legislative session as the GOTP elected officials focused their efforts on restricting abortion, reducing school funding and limiting government except in its supervision of what goes on in our bedrooms. One silly piece of legislation after another and not a single bill that addressed the economic woes of the state. This silly speed limit law was just one more example of how the KS legislature wasted its time for 4 months this past winter and spring.

14. If he's that worried about the speed,
I'll maintain that he's a blowhard.

16. Did you not read my post?
That's not what this is about. It's about the legislature wasting its time passing unnecessary legislation.

7. Yeah, if you raise the speed limit in Wichita from 35 to 45 you'll have fatalities...
but I have driven on rural highways in Kansas and the people who built most of them either didn't know how to or didn't want to build curves because the roads there are straight and level. This looks pretty low risk to me.

9. I-70 is one of the most boring roads to travel..and it's almost impossible to NOT speed
Of course back when I lived in central Kansas, cars did not have cruise control:evilgrin:

Back then the turnpike speed limit was 80:)

where the limit is 75 mph.

It was harrowing.

17. There's a choice?
I just followed my GPS from Boston to Lake Orion.

12 hours of highway driving through Massachusetts, New York, Ontario, and then Michigan. 10 hours of easy driving and two hours of OMGWTF!

20. You should be able
to set your GPS to avoid interstates. Alternatively, there's always a map.

All you want to do is get there.

PS: You need to know ahead of time, that when you get to Michigan the rules change.

25. I'm just saying, it caught me by surprise
I keep forgetting there's not really a United States; just 50 independent states with their own rules of the road.

Peace! :hi:

26. 75 is harrowing?
Jesus, you must be a terribly easy person to frighten. Anyone incapable of operating a motor vehicle safely and confidently on an interstate at that speed should not be in possession of a driving license.

29. Did I say 75? That's the speed limit
So every body drives 10-15 miles over. so that's 85 to 90 mph in bumper to bumper traffic.

And since I'm still here, and alive, I'm perfectly capable of handling a motor vehicle confidently at those speeds. That does not mean I'm too stupid to realize the danger involved.

Have at it, buddy.

21. Should just abolish the speed limit on the interstates.
Same thing they do in Germany, no limit outside towns. What you going to hit, a pile of dirt? A hay bale? There really isn't a reason to have a speed limit for most areas of the country, other than reducing fuel consumption and road wear. But seeing as how I was going around 90-100 mph on one of my more recent cross country trips, I'd really like it if that was actually legal.
