Jackass star crashed at 130 mph!
Police: Ryan Dunn Crashed at 130 MPH

Ryan Dunn was doing 130 miles-per-hour in his Porsche at the time of the horrible crash that killed the "Jackass" star and his passenger -- this according to West Goshen police.

Police Chief Michael Carroll told reporters an accident reconstruction team determined the speed of the crash after inspecting the accident scene. Officials say Dunn's car collided with a guardrail at high speed, crashed in the woods and burst into flames.

According to Carroll, the crash was catastrophic -- claiming he's "never seen a car destroyed in an automobile accident the way this car was ... even before it caught on fire."

Carroll called the accident the "worst" he's ever seen ... by far.

38. Lending someone the excuse of childhood on their way to 40 years old... is just silly.
He may have acted immaturely, but he was no "Junior." He was a grown man who made a decision to drive a car, drunk, really fast.

He's a jerk, not a "junior."

62. That could be a problem for the bar if they served someone
obviously intoxicated who then had a fatal accident.

I am not blaming bar rather than the guy, just speaking of the law. Maybe that varies by state though. In my state bar owners have been charged due to that. Made me think if I owned a bar I'd take keys as people came in and they'd need to pass breathalyzer to get them back. No one would probably come to my hypothetical bar

The problem with many drunks at any age is they don't feel impaired, judgement is one of the first victims of the booze

Honestly the wrong drug is the legal one. I really hate what booze can do in too many lives.

Now, I'm sorry, but if you have SIX DRINKS you shouldn't be driving for a while. Much less driving 130mph. (Which you shouldn't be doing on a public highway anyway.)

87. And I don't really trust the friends to be fully truthful.
Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 04:29 PM by Nailzberg
Could be plain old denial, could be guilt for letting him leave, could be protecting themselves from litigation. But if they're saying "only" three beers and three shots (which is too much anyway), it was likely more.

I also noticed how they attempted to downplay those drinks by saying "lite beers" and "girly shots", as if girlie shots are less potent.

Bottom line, too much booze, too much speed.

60. He was drinking a draft beer in that photo
and his friends (Zac on the right) were drinking some kind of mixed drinks from straws... not a one of them were drinking a shot in that photo. None of them looked wasted in the photo either, but photos are like that... depending on the second captured in time you can look totally normal or like a total buffoon. He was there for four hours and no one seems to know how much he had to drink. Most people said he wasn't visibly intoxicated and not just his friends. This is the first article I've seen that mentions some unidentified person claims he drank a lot and was wasted. Barnaby's from what I know of the place is stricter than most about serving drunks. That doesn't mean that he wasn't wasted either. From working in bars for years it never ceases to amaze me how sober someone can appear until they stand up... and suddenly they look like they'd fall right the hell over (and sometimes they do). These guys know exactly where to go in the immediate area where they can drink till they fall down, get in fistfights, generally make mayhem and hang out till dawn (and I know they sometimes go there for just that reason). If he was wasted I have a very hard time believing the bar would have let him leave like that especially a "favorite son" like him. I've been in bars in the area where these guys sometimes show up and they're treated with more care than the average Joe. I'm more surprised he had his car at all since they often hire a limo service (mostly because the parking in that area thoroughly sucks), and because of area vandalism I'm shocked he'd want his car parked in the area at all. I rarely go to bars in that area for that reason even though I drive a piece of shit... it's always a crap shoot if your car will still be there at the end of the night or if it is which bits will be missing from it, keyed, pissed on, or squashed. Pissing on the windshields of parked cars in the area is an all too common past time of the local drinking crowd especially the nice cars (and I once witnessed some dude piss IN a really nice fancy convertible where someone was foolish enough to leave the top down - which is why he did it).

In any case, it wouldn't have mattered if he was stone cold sober and using binoculars at that speed... he still would have missed the exit and crashed just as bad anyway. That exit isn't easy to see on a good day especially this time of year with all the vegetation... it always sneaks up on me and there is often skid marks there from other people that almost missed it (or DID miss it). At that speed he was a dipshit to still try for it, and he didn't need to be drunk for that... he often drove like a fool and way too fast believing he was nearly invincible behind the wheel. That's what people believe that own cars like that and tend to always drive recklessly and at high speeds, and they believe it more and more with every near miss. Everyone that knows him knows he drove like a fucking idiot as a general rule. I'm more surprised it took this long for him to crash and die either drunk or sober.

Toxicology testing by the coroner indicated Dunn's blood alcohol concentration was 0.196%, which is more than twice the legal state limit of 0.08, Carroll said.

82. Porsches are not made of fiberglas.
Corvettes, yes, Porsches definitely not. They're steel and aluminum, which is why I cannot imagine the force that would be necessary to destroy a Porsche that completely. Some of the more exotic Porsches may have carbon fiber parts as well, which can endure immense forces.

Just teh stoopid coming home to roost.

Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 12:05 AM by cabot
He was ticketed prior for going 20mph over the speed limit, but according to the passenger - who survived - was going the speed limit at the time of the crash. The car that hit him crossed over into his lane. Dean's last words were "that guy's got to see us."

67. Yeah, was that the primary damage? Fire?
Not that I really care but I'm interested in accident reconstruction.

To answer another poster on this thread who jumps to conclusions about what I know. Duh? Yeah, of course I know that an F1 car is very different from a street Porsche and that the accident was probably into a forest which wouldn't happen these days in F1. Still a vehicle should survive a hit with the guard rails intact and not catastrophically damaged unless there are secondary impacts or flips, even at 130 mph. And yes, occupant death would be a high likelihood at these speeds even for a Porsche but total vehicle disintegration surprises me unless there was another source of energy like fire.

68. I'm in the area and news has been extensive here...
From what the police have been saying the impact alone caused a great deal of the damage and it also caught fire on impact. The gas tank didn't explode until they were already on the scene and while they were trying to get down into the ravine. The car was already severely mangled because it smashed into a number of good sized trees before it hit a big one head on. Personally, I don't think it would have been possible for anyone to have survived the accident itself especially if they weren't wearing seatbelts completely aside from the initial fire and subsequent explosion. Still, they all mentioned that they'd never seen a car so badly mangled after the initial impact, but that probably had everything to do with the huge amount of speed and all the trees the car took out. At least one good sized tree was actually chopped in half and it wasn't the real big one they hit head on... and by good sized tree I mean one I could get my arms around the trunk but not by much. The car actually plowed out some bit of forest before finally coming to rest. The ravine is also a lot deeper than I realized... it doesn't look that way when you drive along the road there. The police mentioned that they were having a problem getting down into it to the wreck when the gas tank exploded... it's steep and deep.

Keep in mind, the photo of some of the wreckage being hauled out isn't the whole car. After exploding there wasn't much left of it and they would have had to chop it up to get the bodies out and maybe chop it up more to get the pieces out.

As I mentioned in another reply here that exit is easy to miss on a good day and with all the vegetation even more difficult. It always sneaks up on me (I've missed it more than once), and there's almost always skid marks there where other people tried to make the exit at the last minute not realizing it came up on them so fast. I always thought the vegetation there should be hacked back to make the exit more visible especially because people really slow to a crawl along there looking for it knowing it's going to sneak up on them, and I think that's pretty dangerous on what's essentially a highway.

The skid marks are very long and straight and head straight for where they hit the guard rail, so it looks like he was still attempting to make the exit even at that high rate of speed which is doubly stupid because at that speed you'd have tunnel vision. My guess is that he took that exit many many times for years and years and even at night with tunnel vision knew ALMOST exactly where it was. Or maybe even more likely, his passenger was more familiar with it and was hollering at him something like "Here, HERE! Slow DOWN! It's RIGHT HERE!" causing him to still try for the exit ramp. The skid marks start quite a ways from the exit ramp, so it appears to me that he was trying to slow the car down to still make the exit. I don't personally think he lost control of the car... I think he still tried to make the exit believing he (and the sports car) could do it and was just going WAY too fast. Everyone that knows him knows he always drove way too fast, and he got berated a lot for it.

I don't know what guard rails look like where you're from but around here they aren't much but pretty thin metal and they're short. Ain't no way one of these dippy guard rails would stop anyone going that fast or keep them from plowing up and over... hell, that happens all the time with people going only half that speed. Considering that even after going through the guard rail he chopped at least one fairly fat tree right in half a guard rail isn't going to be more than tin foil going that fast.

53. Your general street-legal Porche is NOT an F1 car.
Doesn't have the crash cage, seat harnesses, safety seats, fire suppresion system or driver protective apparel.

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

Want to be a jackass? Get behind the wheel when drunk. I agree with what Roger Ebert said yesterday.

65. I have seen a worse accident before
Guy had just left work and was going through a green light right in front of me. A guy running from the police hit him at very high speed square on which killed them both instantly. Besides the heavy pieces of the drive-trains from the two cars there wasn't a piece of car sheet metal any bigger than a crumpled up pop can. That is what it looked like right afterwards. Like hundreds of shiny pieces of crumpled up pop cans that looked like they went through a shredder scattered all around the intersection. That was all that was left. Never seen anything like that before or since. What was left of the two guys had to be picked up with a pair of tweezers and a spatula.

70. We had 3 high school boys die in a wreck where they were going 130
Edited on Wed Jun-22-11 08:15 AM by kick-ass-bob
just a couple weeks ago in the Raleigh area.
Car pics (#7 and 8 in the slideshow) and story:
http://www.wbtv.com/story/14846196/3-nc-teens-die-in-wreck-another-hurt-troopers-say

This followed that asshole race car driver getting stopped for going roughly 130 in a 45 and being flippant about it.

Why the hell do we even have cars that go that fast? What is the point?

to someone who thinks that just a few drinks won't make a difference w/driving.

It's sad but he was an irresponsible person for choosing to drive after drinking.

89. It is to normal people...
to some that's just getting started. Some are so removed from reality that they are making excuses and not even realizing it.

In the end, two are dead and many more could have been injured or killed due to someone's choice to drink and drive.
