On this Father's Day, a reminder to my fellow dads of what we need.
I grew up without a father. Tried to be a good one myself; I think I did OK. But sometimes we need a reminder, in this tough economy, this extraordinary political environment, of what dads and everyone else need for themselves and what we need to share.

Happy Father's Day.

2. I had a basic Dad
He drank too much and had a bit of a scathing personality, but he let me play in his workshop, crawl under the car with him, and taught me about a lot of things...

Now I am the MOM-who-is-Dad-too...been raising my kids alone for years.
It's not easy, it certainly makes me wonder if I am teaching my sons how to be men, or if my daughter will have man issues later on...
but I guess we do the best we can, and it is good that they see someone who is willing to do what it takes. i show them how I fix things, and remind them it's about pitching in and doing the work, regardless of gender...

3. Bless you and happy father's day, Mom.
My Mom raised my brother and I way back when as a single mom in the '50s-'60s. Dad was an alcoholic; saw him once after I was 10, at 22, then ID'd him on a slab at the Wayne County morgue six months later. That was pretty much it, except for memories of the violence he inflicted when I was little. Mom worked hard as a laundress. We never went hungry. She was beloved by all, especially her sons.

Just keep doing what you're doing. Yours is an extraordinary post, and I thank you for it. And tell your kids for me that they owe you cooking dinner on this Father's Day, and they are lucky to have you as their Mom/Dad.

Again, thank you.

4. I once attended a metting by a Tibeten Buddhist Nun who discussed that song,
She said the song was wrong because love is neither good nor bad. Love, by itself, doesn't alleviate suffering. Love without wisdom can actually increase suffering.

She said it more eloquent than me, but I thought I would share a Mahayana perspective on the song.
