Perry vetoes texting while driving ban, 22 other bills

A statewide ban on texting while driving was among 23 bills that Gov. Rick Perry killed with vetoes on Friday, the second-smallest number for a legislative session in the decade he has served as Texas' governor...

Among those was House Bill 242, which would have enacted a statewide ban on texting while driving. At least three cities, including Austin, have already banned such texting, and the state already bans texting in school zones.

Perry said that texting while driving "is reckless and irresponsible" but that he saw the bill as "a government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults."

(Reuters) - Texas Governor Rick Perry on Thursday signed into law a measure requiring women seeking an abortion in the state to first get a sonogram. The Republican governor had designated the bill as an emergency legislative priority, putting it on a fast track...

During debate on the House floor in March, Democratic state Representative Carol Alvarado wielded a trans-vaginal probe used for sonograms early in pregnancy. "This is government intrusion at its best," she said during that debate.

1. LOL
But interfering in a woman's right to privacy in matters of reproduction does not...

The insurance piece is only to allow his insurance backers to raise rates indiscriminately and nothing to do with keeping people safe.

2. There's no disconnect there - women are not, by definition, adults.
They must be told by a man what to do, what to think.

Micromanaging the behavior of adults and of women are two very different things.

7. I'd say almost all traffic laws are micromanaging behavior on behalf of public safety.
Suppose drivers were allowed to decide how to enter an intersection without the benefit of Stop signs or traffic lights? Or drive at any speed that suited them?

Hope the Legislature overrides Perry's veto.

12. It is possible to text drugs to someone!
Quick, tell Gov. GoodHair that drug couriers are now texting their wares.

That'll bring quick government relief.
