Members of AKB48 perform at the Budokan in Tokyo this week as part of the Japanese Red Cross Society event “LOVE in Action Meeting.” The event, in which Miliyah Kato and Mai Kuraki also took part, was held to promote blood donation awareness among Japan’s young generation. In recent years, the number of young people donating blood has decreased.

Four women in Rifu, Miyagi Prefecture, are seen making decorations on June 14, 2011, for Sendai's Tanabata Festival celebrations. The theme of this year's festival, scheduled for Aug. 6-8, is "Recovery and Requiem" -- recovery from March 11's earthquake and tsunami, and requiem for those who did not survive them. (Mainichi)

Fireworks bearing messages of hope to victims of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, tsunami and ensuing nuclear crisis are pictured at a fireworks factory in the Fukushima Prefecture city of Sukagawa on June 14, 2011. Workers at the factory, which normally produces some 30,000 fireworks a year for events in the prefecture, wrote messages such as "Hope," or "Hang on, Fukushima" in a bid to encourage local reconstruction efforts.
