Weiner was the 110th most liberal Congress member, according to National Journal.
He did draw attention, but there are dozens of other more liberal members you've probably never heard of -- who are doing their jobs effectively, day in and day out. Maybe we should concentrate on supporting these men and women.

1. He wasn't the most liberal, true, but that wasn't his virtue.
His virtue was being outspoken in a way that attracted people's attention. The problem with the liberals we've never heard of is that we've never heard of them.

2. Good point. They have to speak out to make real changed
by making people think. All we hear is usually the RW hysterics and lies.

6. His way of drawing attention may work better in NY than elsewhere.

18. Too bad it wasn't left to NY'ers to decide
Funny how elections are suppose to be so "important". So much yammering about election fraud. Yet today without the benefit of an election, the voters choice was removed. The "King" and the "Queen" of the party decided he had to go. So now you can rest easy, because the threat to you in Podunk or where ever the hell you live, has been removed. You're safe! And while Weiner may have never did any good for you, I will remember the good he did for his district, especially for the 9/11 responders. I can't even say that about Obama, he never took up their cause. I never once saw him speak up for them. I always thought he had missed the perfect opportunity to do that, when he defended the Mosque near Ground Zero. He could have added if people were so worried about "Patriotism" and being "American" they should be demanding that those who risked their lives to help others, get the health care they deserve. Didn't happen. I heard more from Weiner, and my other congress people & Jon Stewart for Christ sakes, then I heard from Obama.

As far as speaking up for Medicare and Social Security, hope you refuse to take it when the time comes, because he spoke up about that too.

I know one thing for certain, Weiner did more for people then you ever have.

22. Yeah, too bad he took it out of their hands
by holding a press conference where he lied, by continuing lies for 10 days, and by encouraging two of the women to lie. Too bad Pelosi can't trust him anymore, because he lied to her, too. If he had told her the truth in the first place, she could have helped him manage his situation like Vitter.

There will be other good NY progressives who will want to take his place -- and they could turn out to be more effective than he was.

27. Uh...when you say "his way of drawing attention", what precisely are you referring to?
The guy ended up getting lots of attention in lots of different ways.

9. Who's attention did he attract?
...besides liberal political activists who already agreed with him?

I'm not criticizing his speeches, but I'm not convinced they accomplished much in changing the mind of average voters or most politicians.

Activating passive people who agree with you also counts.

Can't imagine what rating The National Journal would use. Do know they're allied with the Conscious Capitalism crowd.

12. Harkin and Lahey both voted for and supported DOMA
So the term 'hero' means different things to different people. Apparently in this case, it is fine that they cast prudish, bigoted votes against the civil rights of millions over some dogmatic view of sexuality.

16. The DOMA signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1996?
Don't know what ADA said about that. Do know that in the year 2010, Mr. Weiner had a 100-percent Pro-Democratic voting record.

You know: Liberal, the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party, as people I admire liked to say.

brow beating us until we "re-evaluate" our thinking, and fall lock step behind party leadership.

For gawd's sake, he resigned already, you people win, he is gone.

It is our loss.

19. That seat may remain vacant
It's now up to Governor Cuomo to decide. So it's not going to be as easy to replace him as some of the "experts" on Du think.

"Andrew Cuomo Faces Strategic Choices In Filling Anthony Weiner's Seat

WASHINGTON -- The process to fill the soon-to-be-vacant seat of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) may not be as smooth or as simple as initial reports suggest.

30. unbelievable,
you are going to brow beat us until we what, melt into a puddle, and cry uncle.

Look, he resigned, You win. You got what you wanted.

Now, what else do you want?

As to your question of Why should I? Because the situation has been settled, and there is a matter of respect for other people. Even those who have opinions different than your own. I am heartbroken and disappointed, and although I am sure you see that as weakness, you cannot force me to change my opinion.

And I thought that once he resigned, we were going to move on to talk about "more important things".

15. i agree 100% with your comment
but the National Journal rankings are useless imo.

Those rankings seem to have one purpose: to label the Democratic presidential nominee "the most liberal Senator", which they did with both Kerry in 2004 and Obama in 2008. Both were absurdly ranked #1 those years. Funny, eh?

31. "the 110th most liberal Congress member"...
If that were indeed true (which it blatantly isn't) then why is our party so F'ed up? I could believe there are 110 blue dogs, but 110 liberals? Well, in this day and age, anyone left of Ghengis Khan is considered a liberal.
