Harpooned whales radioactive but still safe to eat, says Japan
Edited on Wed Jun-15-11 07:49 AM by Poll_Blind
From The Herald Sun:
JAPANESE whale hunters have found traces of radioactive caesium in two of the ocean giants recently harpooned off its shores in the Pacific Ocean, a fisheries agency official says.

Two minke whales culled off the northern island of Hokkaido showed readings of 31 becquerels and 24.3 becquerels of caesium per kilogram, he said, adding that the cause might be the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The level is far below the country's recently set maximum safe limit for seafood of 500 becquerels per kilogram, he said.

--snip--

Japan hunts whales under a loophole to an international moratorium that allows killing the sea mammals for "scientific research".

Japan also argues that whaling is an integral part of the island-nation's culture, and whale meat is sold openly in shops and restaurants.

Well fuck me gently with a chainsaw Veronica, the radioactive ?click">whale-burgers are still safe to eat!

This article is more proof that I need a giant "FUCK ALL OF THIS!" stamp.

3. I know what you mean. The grim absurdity of it all...
I should have realized if anyone was ever going to Nuke The Whales, it would be the Japanese.

2. A sense of humanity hasn't stopped the Japanese from slaughtering whales, I
wonder if self preservation will curb their appetites?

4. Then their fucking culture needs to change.
I'm sick of inexcusable behavior being excused by "culture". Bullshit.

5. In this case, they're hiding behind "science". What they do is kill the whales, then...
...pretend to do some sort of scientific study on them, then cut 'em up and send them off to gourmet butcher shops in Japan. Should that description sound embellished, I invite you to do a little research on their scam. They've been doing exactly the same thing since at least 2000 and (from what I've read) 1987, I believe.

Whale meat is openly sold as a delicacy.

13. Yeah, it's actually a blatant scam the Japanese have been pulling for at least 13 years now.
They pretend it's for research and that's the loophole they exploit. Once they harpoon a minke, say, they haul it aboard, take some metrics or don't and then package the carcass as quickly as possible to be shipped off to gourmet restaurants in Japan (and sometimes the US, sneakily!) where a single small slice of the stuff can run upwards of $100!

Do some digging and you'll find out a WHOLE lot more. There was a restaurant in LA I think busted about a year ago for serving whale. Of course in Japan it's sold openly.

Again, it is sold openly...it is "legal" there to buy if you have the money.

10. Technically, that is true.
After all, if you are a typical Japanese citizen, you've already absorbed a shitload of radiation, so a glowing hunk of whale blubber won't do anymore damage. :argh:
