GOP 2012ers have health care skeletons

Few if the declared GOP leaders have a clean record on health care reform.




While Romney's foes might not be able to resist the opportunity to hammer the front-runner on his greatest vulnerability, that strategy is not without risk: Many of them, it turns out, have their own health care skeletons in the closet.

Newt Gingrich has been on record for nearly two decades as backing a requirement to purchase health insurance. Jon Huntsman once flirted with the Massachusetts model for Utah. And Tim Pawlenty appointed commissions that studied both in Minnesota.

Then in 2007, Tim Pawlenty advocated setting up an insurance exchange - now a key pieceew f of the federal reform that he now says interferes with the free market.

Only two announced candidates, Rick Santorum and Herman Cain, can claim a history of hard-line stances against mandating that employers purchase health care for their workers.
