Fukushima City to give children radiation dosimeters...in September.
From BBC:
Japan's Fukushima city is to give radiation dosimeters to 34,000 children to measure their exposure from the tsunami-hit nuclear power plant.

All children aged between four and 15 will wear the devices for three months, and data will be collected monthly.

The city lies about 60km (37 miles) from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which was badly damaged in the 11 March quake and tsunami.

More than three months on the facility is still leaking radioactive material.

Fukushima city officials said dosimeters would be given to children to wear from September. The devices will also be distributed to those with children under three years at the request of parents.

More at the link! This seems far less like a prophylactic and more like an attempt at close accounting on a Butcher's Bill.

1. We live in a scary world.
I wonder how long it will be before the first "Hello Kitty" dosimeter comes out.

I stopped crying for our future, it's already here.

2. It would be interesting to see how they turn out, the monitors.
I'd be hesitant about being that near the plant, but sometimes there is not much of a choice.

3. I admit the story is not written well but my take is the kiddies will wear them until September
I had to read it several times earlier today to come to that conclusion.

I may be wrong though?

4. My take is the wording of "FROM September."

5. I understand that but I just think it was a typo or mistranslation
As I said I may be wrong?

That is just what I took from it after reading it entirely a couple of times.

I am not being argumentative about this. Just saying what I think. You may very well be correct.

6. Understood. I think my biggest beef (outside of the possible time window) is that the...
...dosimeter information will be harvested monthly which I find an epic example of "a day late and a dollar short". Those who will be wearing these dosimeters will be the most-sensitive (developmentally) to radiation, especially for isotopes of Iodine and Strontium.

7. Sounds to me like
" well, since we have all these guinea pigs here, might as well get some data"
