I suspect that part of the motive for the Tea Party astroturf is to replace Republicans in Congress who weren't rabid enough to sign off on the full Pinochet treatment of America. Some little recess in the back of their brain had a spark of conscious, or at least fear of the consequences of failure or the judgment of history. Those people are being replaced by mindless automatons like Michelle Bachmann, who will not hesitate to disappear you or sign your death warrant, and the Democrats mealy-mouthed, half-assed opposition is doing everything to give the GOP a chance to do it.
