Catholic School Bans Rainbows—Fun and Care Bears Likely Next

How many wonderful things can a school board ban to prevent kids from being gay?

Last weekend, St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School in Canada implemented a ban on rainbows.

“They said rainbows are associated with Pride,” said Leanne Iskander, the sixteen year-old kid who started the official gay-straight alliance at her school in March. “There’s so many other things that a rainbow could be. It’s ridiculous.”

Iskander and the Gay-Straight Alliance were told about the ban at an anti-homophobia event they organized at school.

In February, Ontario’s Catholic schools were instructed to allow anti-bullying clubs, but according to Extra, “a silent ban remains on all student groups focused on gay, lesbian and trans issues and group names can’t contain the word gay. GSAs are prohibited because ‘they lead to activism.’”
