Former Gov. Purdue abandons Gingrich for Pawlenty.
NOTE: The author mistaken wrote that Purdue is still governor.

WASHINGTON — Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue today jumped from backing Newt Gingrich to supporting Tim Pawlenty, and will join Pawlenty's leadership team, officials with Pawlenty's camp have confirmed.

The AP's Brian Bakst broke this part of the Gingrich story, which is rapidly developing at this point after his entire top leadership team and most staffers quit the flagging campaign en masse earlier today.

Perdue, up to this morning, was a national co-chairman of Gingrich's campaign.

Now, he's the first sitting governor to back Pawlenty's campaign.
