Suspect in toddler's drowning death is 5 year old girl
An 18-month-old boy’s drowning death in a bathtub last week is now being investigated as a possible homicide, police told The Kansas City Star on Wednesday.

But even more shocking to authorities is that their suspect is a 5-year-old girl.

Kansas City police and local juvenile court officials said they could not remember ever investigating such a serious case involving such a young suspect.

“I’ve been here 26 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Mary Marquez, a juvenile officer with Jackson County Family Court.

3. Surely she needs to be prosecuted as an adult for such a heinous crime.

4. Sounds like the adults left them without proper supervision
That's who should be held responsible, not a 5-year old kid.

7. My thought exactly.
5-year olds don't have the capacity of right and wrong...they are guided by impulse, not reason.

The five-year old lives in the here and now, and doesn't comprehend the idea of long-term consequences. He has difficulty seeing a point of view that is different from his own and this can make him seem stubborn and argumentative. But, he is generally cooperative and helpful, wanting to please his parents and be good. He may come home from kindergarten talking about a child who is bad. This is a good time to help him recognize what happens when someone behaves badly and to praise him for his good behavior.

5. If this happened in FL she may be charged as an adult.

We have a sad case going on here right now of a 12 yr. old boy who was charged as an adult with 1st degree murder for beating his 2 yr. old sister to death. http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2011-06-02/story/jacksonville-12-year-old-charged-first-degree-murder-brother

His mother is also held in custody, but if you read the family history and have at least an ounce of heart it will drive you to tears. The system has seriously failed all of these people in a seriously negligent manner, at least 3 generations of them.

10. A number of young children left alone in the house: How could that go wrong?
-Every adult who allowed this to happen bears responsibility -NOT the 5 year old.
