Scotland to split from UK and 'be a nation again'?
Source: MSNBC
By Ian Johnston

LONDON — It is the nation that once ran the largest empire the world has ever known, a country so powerful that it claimed to "rule the waves" in a patriotic anthem.

But last month a "political tsunami" struck the United Kingdom and this once-mighty state faces being broken up.

An astonishing victory for nationalists in the Scottish parliamentary elections means it is almost certain that a referendum will be held within five years on whether Scotland should leave the U.K. and become an independent country.

The Scottish National Party (SNP) won 69 out of 129 seats in Edinburgh's Holyrood parliament, with about 45 percent of the vote, up by more than 12 percentage points. Their three main rival parties — Labour, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats — all lost ground.

That would be entertaining.

Talking about his hoose on the loch.

4. So, Scotland wants to commit suicide and murder England into the bargain?
I'm as proud a Scottish-American as any, but this makes no damn sense to me.

9. Scotland isn't viable as a nation on its own.

Hell, the UK as a whole barely is right now. And how exactly would Scotland generate revenue with its economy? The Silicon Glen is a joke, the North Sea oil is nearly played out. Will they base their entire economy on tourism and haggis? Scotland would return to its 17th Century levels of poverty if it struck out on its own.

And England, well don't get me started. If you drain all the Scottish brains from England, then England is well and truly screwed...

7. Well, they've already broken away from parts of Florida and the rest of the USA, so why not
reclaim their own heritage, legacy, or whatever code word they're using these days.

10. Not too surprised by this...
I understand the brits are not overly popular in Scotland.

I read about some titled english so and so who attended the premier of "Braveheart" in Scotland

and I was driven out by the harrassement of the other viewers.

I know a british guy, also, who complains about the "abuse" he

gets when he goes to Scotland....Oh well.

12. Please, learn what the words mean if you're going to talk about it
The Scottish are British. 'Britain' is the large island; it was called that by the Romans, apparently after one of the Celtic tribes living on it. The Scottish, being a mixture of Picts, Celts, Vikings and Angles, are certainly 'British'.

Each time you use the words 'Brit/British' in your post, it only makes sense if you actually mean 'English'.

11. Most unlikely to happen
A lot of people in Scotland vote SNP with regard to local issues, or to express displeasure with other parties. This seems to be to quite an extent a case of former LibDem voters switching to the SNP. All polls suggest that the Scots will not vote for independence.

18. What a load of hooey
No one over here is talking about this. It's been done before and voted down. Scotland is not prepared to be a poor country going to the EU begging for breadcrumbs to replace the riches of England.
