An 89-year-old woman whose home was swindled by a self-ordained bishop will be able to get her property back under a ruling issued by a Los Angeles County judge.
The district attorney's office says Pomona Superior Court Judge Steven Blades on Monday granted a motion by prosecutors to declare two grant deeds for the home "null and void."
Prosecutors say Leroy Dowd, head of the now-defunct Triumph Church of God in Los Angeles, tricked the woman into signing over a grant deed in 2006 under a ruse to secure Medicare and Social Security benefits. Dowd then sold the home, which was paid in full, to a straw buyer who borrowed $800,000 on the property.
Dowd was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to grand theft last year.
