(Reuters) - Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich said on Monday that he wanted the Chicago Tribune to fire writers who were critical of him, while he was helping the paper structure a deal connected with the sale of the Chicago Cubs.
But Blagojevich, testifying in his own defense at his corruption retrial, said he was just "venting" when he told his chief of staff the writers should be fired.
Blagojevich also denied on Monday that his desire to be appointed to a cabinet position in the Obama administration, or to head a non-profit funded by wealthy Democrats, was connected to his power to appoint a senator to fill the vacancy created when Barack Obama became president.
Blagojevich is on trial for the second time on charges he tried to exchange official action for personal and financial gain, including a high-paying job for himself and his wife, Patti.
