We helped set the trap for rep Weiner by defending him in advance of the facts ....
... by defending him you agreed that such behavior was our business and unacceptable in a politician.

The correct responses to rumors of a scandal related to someone's personal life by those not directly involved are:

1 - I don't know
2 - I don't care
3 - It doesn't matter

Because it's true.

2. Then you were suckered by him. Yet you sound proud about it.
It's fine to believe it was a scam. It's still the case that the behavior alleged was not your business and it didn't matter. To defend him said the exact opposite.

3. The comments are about the use of smear outside of legal systems of justice.

And used for targeted justice, not about his situation.

The data is not relevant, however the effect on society, and the usage of such methods are wrong.

4. I think what's needed is more skepticism
just because it's one of "ours" doesn't mean there is no there there.

5. Absolutely right.
Some here have said how foolish they now feel for having defended Rep. Weiner. I'm a bit disappointed in Weiner, but since I didn't rush to judgment in the first place, I have no reason to feel foolish now. I did point out a few days ago that Weiner's actions and statements seemed contradictory to each other (e.g., claiming his Twitter account was hacked, but declining to call for a police investigation to which he would have been entitled), but beyond that reserved judgment until more was known.

I am reminded of a sermon I once heard by the late Rev. Dr. William Sloane Coffin, who was then the chief pastor of Riverside Church in New York. Coffin, in addition to being a pastor, had been an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam war and a major civil rights activist. In the sermon, he was talking about people who were feeling discouraged or disillusioned about the state of affairs in our country. To those folks, Dr. Coffin said simply: "Who the hell ever told you you had the right to harbor illusions in the first place?"

I addressed in another thread the need for maintaining some perspective concerning Weiner. (See http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1242288 ).

7. It's especially true for those that support him anyway, as I would ...
... It looks doubly foolish to bring a vehement defense and then when the allegations are proved true, THEN try to say it didn't matter anyway.

10. No, we made the mess bigger by conceding that his private business was our business
They presented just a little bit, one photo that no one could prove was him and said isn't this terrible? Instead of saying I don't care we agreed it wasn't him and allowed that, if it was him, it would be terrible.

And it's not terrible.
There are worse things happening.

But many of us were suckered into pushing Rep Weiner into the trap.
