After Gutting Education Budget, GOP NC House Speaker Says Teachers Don’t Care About Kids
Source: Think Progress

One of the current trends that is vogue in the politics of K-12 education is to bash teachers and claim that they do not care about the quality of education they are providing and that they are solely responsible for poor outcomes in schools in impoverished communities.

After passing a new bill that would make it much more difficult for the North Carolina Association of Educators to collect dues from its members, North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis (R) said at the state’s GOP convention that teachers who oppose the new legislation — which could dramatically harm teachers’ collective bargaining organizations — don’t care about kids and only care about their jobs and pensions:

Tillis drew applause also when he said the legislature planned next week to adopt both a bill requiring voters to produce a photo identification, and a bill that would bar the state from collecting dues for the N.C. Association of Educators, the group that lobbies for teachers and other groups. “They don’t care about kids. They don’t care about classrooms,” Tillis said. “They only care about their jobs and their pensions.”

4. Here are some other beuts out of the mouths of NC Republicans:
Budget would cut prison chaplains

"Lewis said if legislators cut the number of chaplains, the prison system will have to use other employees to try to organize and facilitate religious services. He echoed concerns about providing equal treatment for non-Christian inmates if the system is reliant only on the mostly Christian volunteers.

"Hunt brushed aside those concerns. "If they (Muslim clerics) want to come in, they can come in," Hunt said. "If they don't, I don't think that is our problem."

Democrats break away on budget

The work of the five Democrats is meeting with Republican plaudits and Democratic criticism. Minority Leader Joe Hackney, an Orange County Democrat, said the five had usurped the governor's role in budget negotiations.

Tillis applauded their bravery. "I think that they have demonstrated a higher degree of courage than just about anybody I've seen within the five years I'm here," he said. And he's willing to protect them.

On Friday, he announced in a closed-door meeting of his caucus (broadcast accidentally over an open microphone) a last-minute committee hearing on a bill that will hurt the NCAE by making it harder for the group to collect dues.

"The NCAE has gone into all five districts with mailers hammering these Democrats," Tillis said. "We just want to give them a little taste of what's about to come."

Everyone who is so confident that Obama will handily win in 2012, think again. It's ugly beyond belief in this state, and Rs are well-funded and extremely motivated.

who want to first destroy them - then privatize them all - all for the sake of profit. And they are doing it by shitting all over our great teachers here in NC. This is seriously fucked up. :(
