Republicans poised to make U.S. economy “scream”
Making the US Economy ‘Scream’
By Robert Parry

June 3, 2011

<...>

Already, the Republican success in limiting the scope of the stimulus package and then labeling it a failure – combined with deep cuts in local, state and federal government spending – have helped push the economy back to the brink where a double-dip recession is now a serious concern.

<...>

Of course, the reality of a new Republican administration, especially with a GOP Congress, would be the return of the old right-wing nostrums: more tax cuts for the rich, less regulation of corporations, more military spending, and more privatization of social programs.

Any budget balancing will come at the expense of labor rights for union employees and shifting the costs for health care onto the backs of the elderly. Yet, all this will be surrounded by intense propaganda explaining the public pain as a hangover from misguided government “social engineering.”

<...>

The hard reality in the United States today is that the Republicans and the Right are now fully organized, armed with a potent propaganda machine and possessing an extraordinary political will. They are well-positioned to roll the U.S. economy off the cliff and blame the catastrophe on Obama.

Indeed, that may be their best hope for winning Election 2012.

2. But the voters know that voting in more Republicans WON'T solve the problem.

Voters know that the Rethugs will forget everything they've promised once they're in office.

Need proof? Think back to the reign of King George II when the economy flourished under a Rethug-controlled the House, Senate, White House, media, AND Supreme Court!

3. We do know that they scream like stuck pigs when you mention them getting rid of medicare.

I think democrats need to talk about that more often..... so it sticks in people's minds. Their screaming is a sign that they have not yet nailed down the propaganda meme on that issue. Maybe they have a plan to explain it all soon, maybe they don't have a plan for rationalizing their votes on Ryan's plans. Either way Democrats need to strike now.

* Added later:I spoke too soon. Here is the propaganda that will fix government in the minds of dumb people: government as a heroin addict.

5. If they can get it to scream loud enough,
as if some of us are not already doing so, within or without, that might become a signal that brings the revolution that is brewing to the surface.

The game is afoot.

6. There must be a way to hold up a mirror and let their propaganda reflect back on themselves.

7. They also regularly "err" when counting the votes. I can call them they, since the corporations
counting our votes happen to be owned by rightwingers. And it is corporations counting our votes, not the public, or anyone beholden to the public.

8. Did Republicans limit the scope of the stimulus package?
Edited on Sun Jun-05-11 12:10 AM by MannyGoldstein
I don't remember that.

I recall that it was all that Obama asked for, because it would keep unemployment below 8%. Of course, competent economists such as Krugman and Stiglitz said that far more was needed, but we couldn't really hear them from under the bus.

9. If they win in 2012, goodbye America.

That will be the end. Maybe that's what it would take to finally wake the idiots in this country up.
