Edited on Sat Jun-04-11 11:02 PM by pnwmom
for the fact that Sen. Ted Stevens failed in one of his pet projects: opening the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge to oil drillers. She is strongly pro-choice and pro-GLBT. She was also a co-sponsor of a bill to have a public option in the health reform legislation.

We're lucky to have her working for us alongside Patty Murray, another great Senator.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Cantwell

Don't ask, Don't Tell and the DREAM Act

Cantwell voted in September 2010 to invoke cloture to begin debate on the don't ask, don't tell policy in the military. Debate would have also commenced on the DREAM Act, though this was halted due to a Republican filibuster.<41>

Health care reform

Cantwell supports health care reform in the United States and was a co-sponsor of Senator Ron Wyden's (D-OR) Healthy Americans Act. In her role as a member of the Finance Committee, she had an influential role in crafting health care reform legislation. On September 29, 2009, when the Finance Committee considered health care reform legislation, Cantwell supported amendments to establish a public health care option that would compete with private insurers.<42>

Environmental views

In addition to her opposition to drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge, Cantwell has been one of the most vocal critics of the increase of oil and gasoline prices during 2008.<43> Advocating increased regulation of futures markets and windfall taxes on oil profits, Cantwell has drawn scathing criticism from the Wall Street Journal.<44>

Cantwell received the highest rating possible from the League of Conservation Voters for her environmental voting record. She is known for supporting alternative energy research and for protecting Washington's forests from logging and the construction of paved roads and has earned endorsement from various prominent environmental advocacy groups<21> and other environmental groups.<22><23> She has opposed drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on multiple occasions, has voted to reduce oil usage by 40% by 2025, and has opposed legislation to relax or terminate CAFE standards.<45> The Seattle Times has described Cantwell's environmental record as "pristine",<46> and the Wilderness Society has described Cantwell as an "environmental champion".<47>

The Cantwell-Collins bill (S. 2877),<48> also called the Carbon Limits and Energy for America's Renewal (CLEAR) Act,<49> directs the Secretary of the Treasury to establish a program to regulate the entry of fossil carbon into commerce in the United States, to promote renewable-energy jobs and economic growth.<50><51> The bill is bipartisan with Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine.

13. Both my senators kind of suck.
Mark Begich is too busy cozying up to the oil companies to be considered a true Democrat at this point, although he does support all the social issues. Lisa Murkowski bucks the Republican trend now and then, but she too sucks up to oil companies.

Maybe I shouldn't say they suck, but more like they're "so-so," and I can't get real excited about either one of them.

I was kind of proud of her on the Ryan budget vote -- even if she opposed the budget for the wrong reasons, at least she voted against it.

On the other hand, both she and Mark Begich blew it on the ending subsidies for oil companies vote. That's sort of the default position of Alaskan politicians, unfortunately. We're fighting our governor now, who wants to give the oil companies a $2 billion a year tax break here, by eliminating Sarah's ACES plan ("Alaska's Clear and Equitable Share"), the one good policy that came out of her administration. Because of ACES we're one of the few states in the country running a budget surplus. Parnell wants to give it all away. (Maybe because he was once a Conoco-Phillips lobbyist and worked for EXXON on the EXXON VALDEZ oil spill litigation). I wonder if more people would have voted against him if that information had been more widely known.

77. Casey is ok, Toomey is a complete and total asshole.
Not voting in Sestak was a terrible mistake as was voting for Corbett for Governor.

79. Pelosi and DiFi.
Pelosi is far better than post but I will never understand "impeachment is off the table" and the bi-partisanship with GWB/Obama/Paulson etal in the Wall Street bailout.

I was a student at Cal when Mayor Moscone and Suprervisor Dan White were murdured by quitter Supervisor Dan White, and DiFi became Mayor of San Francisco. I have always voted for DiFi. I also graduated from the same Haas MBA program at Cal as her husband, Richard Blum. Blum benefited much in the early GWB years from no-bid DoD contracts into shell companies.

I will not cast a vote for DiFi again.

Where is the Obama DOJ?
