Just Blew Up Some Bible-Thumpers
Edited on Sat Jun-04-11 01:56 PM by The Doctor.
What a blast!

Well... I talked to them. No explosives were harmed in the exchange.

So I'm pulling a left turn at an intersection on my way home. On the opposite corner is a Family Video store. On the curb were two men holding placards. I could see the words "Don't Rent Here" on the top of the signs, but it wasn't until I was through the intersection that I could make out the bottom of the signs; "Porn Destroys Families".

This was just what I needed to perk up an otherwise cloudy day.

So I pull into the parking lot (nearer the demonstrators), get out of my car, and said; "Hey! Cool! I had no idea they had porn here!", then trotted merrily into the store.

I asked the guy behind the counter about them. He said they're there about once a month. Even though they won the suit to prevent them from renting porn, they let them do their thing because, as he put it, "Heh... it's free advertising."

So I rent a couple of movies, and trot merrily back out to the two fellows. One appears to be in his fifties, he's thin with dark hair, glasses, a bit of scruff, wearing a green windbreaker. I find out later his name is 'Al'. The other is younger, early thirties, had the look of an ex-jock type meathead... and the dull look to boot.

They looked anxiously at the movies I was carrying. So just to mess with them I said, "Hey! How's it going?" and gestured with the movies toward the dull one. He backed up, gaze locked on movies.

So I asked, "What's the big deal?"

Dull Guy, "Well, you obviously think there's nothing wrong with porn."

Me; "Not necessarily. There's some illegal stuff out there and stuff that I find personally objectionable. But what people like is none of my business. Why is it yours?"

DG; "It causes infidelity, higher divorce rates, objectifies women and demeans them."

Me; "Really? What about the men in porn? What about gay porn?", as I gesture deliberately and hold the movies toward him. He stuttered; "Well, I, uh... it... I don't know what people's preferences are."

Me; "Ok, so why are their preferences your business?"

DG; "There are studies showing that people who watch porn have a higher rate of divorce and infidelity."

Me; "Ok, do those studies explain how porn actually causes those things?"

DG; "Well, would you watch porn with your daughter or your mother?"

Me; "That's insane. Why would I do that? Do you really think that everyone who watches porn does so with children?"

DG; "Well, no, but some do."

Me; "Some people screw mules, that doesn't make it right. What's illegal is illegal. So you have studies that show correlation. Do you know the difference between causation and correlation?"

DG; "Yeah."

Me; "Then you know that porn is not necessarily the cause of infidelity or divorce, but just as likely incidental to whatever the circumstances are. I'm just looking to see what kind of integrity you have regarding this issue."

Then, seeing his fellow in trouble, the older guy jumps in; "Well, if we're talking integrity, then the other side of that same coin is that you can't say there is no causation."

Me; "True, but the fact of the matter is that there is no proof, or even solid evidence of causation. You really can't say 'Porn destroys families' as though it is a fact."

Al; "Well, that's an opinion."

Me; "Yes, it is, but one with no foundation yet stated as a fact."

DG; "Well, when there's so much strong correlation, I mean, really... how much more does it take for someone to see the problem."

So we go back and forth a bit, and I nail them down on the 'well, there's a strong correlation' position. By now, they're still going to be certain of their convictions and I'm telling them that's great, it's great they're standing up for what they believe in, and so long as strong correlations are enough to have them convinced of something.

Then I pull out the cannon.

"So, for over thirty years scientists have told us that our activity will result in climate change."

Al; "Oh, we don't want to get into that..."

Me; "Bear with me.", I hold up the movies again, they shut up for a second. I continue; "Nearly every prediction that scientists made decades ago are happening now. The Glaciers and sea ice are melting, the oceans acidifying, coral reefs dying, extreme weather, and rising global temperatures all in direct and indisputable correlation to increasing CO2 levels with no other explanation. The correlation is far stronger, with real facts and evidence to back it up, than the correlation you are basing your belief on."

Al; "Well there are studies disputing that we..."

Me; "And every single one of them flawed in ways I can prove. But the point is that you cannot argue with the fact that warming is happening in direct correlation to increased CO2 levels. You know those two things are true whether you agree with the conclusion or not, right?"

Al; "Well, sure."

Me; "Then you must, in the face of an indisputable correlation, agree that we are indeed the cause of the warming, just as you believe that porn is the cause of divorce and infidelity on the strength of mere correlation, right?"

Al; "Well, no. I don't."

Me; "So, correlation is adequate for you to justify your moral position, and enough to support one belief you chose to have, but not enough to believe something you don't want to. You, sir, make your chosen claim based on the strength of something you simply ignore or throw out when applied to other issues. I'm not saying this to insult you, but it's a fact; You, sir, are a hypocrite."

Al; "Well... yes. I suppose I am."

I could hear the Dull Guy's head burst behind me.

I told them it was great they were out there and having fun with it. I thanked them for the conversation, and went to shake Al's hand... which he pulled away. He visibly relaxed and shook my hand after, with my hand still out, I showed them the movies; "The Big Lebowski" and "Stone".

Oh, what a fun day!

I'd say with about 95% accuracy to the letter as it's still fresh.

I'm not sure I would have messed with them that long, though...

The whole thing could have taken less than a minute...

You: "Hey cool...I didn't know they had porn here!"

You come out with movies...

Porn-o-phobes look askance at your bag...

You ask them where you can find a store that sells industrial size jars of Vaseline.

Porn-o-phobes fall over in apoplectic fits.

Your job is done there...

33. Chip implant.
Edited on Sat Jun-04-11 03:56 PM by The Doctor.
The cog-psyche guys and the tech guys got together at the University here and put together a carbon-nanotube, semi-conductor chip about the size of a pin head that's implanted near the base of the hippocampus. It uses electron-neurofacing redux to map and store about 24 or so hours of pathway configuration. In essence, it allows the user to 'retrace' all the pathways and locations of potentiated events. It can't store 'memories', of course. There is no machine language that would allow it. It uses enzyme breakdown to hold a charge, and could last a few weeks. (The prototypes aren't protected from the body's natural breakdown mechanisms, but if it goes commercial... well, they'll make it last.)

The animal (rat) testing was a success, and being on the cog-team, they asked me to volunteer. Naturally I was on my feet before they finished asking.

So far, so good. Things just stay sharp and clear as though the event took place seconds ago. So far the tests we do at the lab are pretty positive. There should be an article about it coming up in 'Science Journal' by Doctor Agon in the next couple weeks.

Cheers!

:hi:

Oh, and I've got this really nice bridge....

55. So, when people here recount their experiences, it requires a science fiction device?
I know this is going to be difficult to wrap your head around, but plenty of people, especially those trained in things like cognitive science, are actually pretty good at describing events with a high degree of accuracy.

I understand that such an ability is outside of your imagination, so perhaps you should just listen to your news and radio programs that tell you what you want to hear.

Good luck.

29. When they misuse correlations this way, I have another example for them ...
I tell them that we need to ban ice cream because it causes rape.

The data shows that as ice cream sales in a particular region INCREASE, so does the incidence of rape.

Of course the increase in ice cream sales, and in the incidence of rape are actually caused by something else. Warm Weather.

People buy more ice cream in warmer weather, and unfortunately, the incidence of rape goes up in warmer weather too.

The same basic relationship is apparent in the argument made by those thumpers. Porn usage rates and infidelity rates increase in troubled marriages. They are correlated because the same 3rd factor increases both.

So if they wanted to protect marriage, they need to stop trying to treat the symptoms, and figure out why marriages fail.

But that would not fit with their world view ... its easier for them to go after porn, or gays to protect marriage, rather than try to understand what's really going on.

Which is why they might as well ban ice cream to protect women from rape.

I loved your story.

I have one I think you'll appreciate about a Tea Party neighbor.

I live in an upscale suburb in NC and this Tea Party neighbor drives a brand new, mid-life crisis, black convertible mustang.

Once in a while he puts magnets on the back of it ... Impeach Obama ... and OMG WTF (where the O uses the Obama graphic). The second one makes me (and other neighbors laugh ... what guy in his late 40s early 50s puts WTF on his car?? But I digress).

He only puts these magnets on his car occasionally. My guess is that he's going to some Tea Party event when he does. He pulls them off otherwise, which I think is pretty funny too.

We say hi, and never discuss politics ... he's only 2 houses down, and his daughter and my daughter play in the same softball league. I had an Obama Biden sign in my yard, so he has to know where I stand.

So one day, my daughter's team and his daughter's team are playing against each other. The city fields these girls (10-14 year old) play on are the most beautiful fields. They are perfectly maintained. Far better then any field I played on at any level growing up. Perfect infields (not a bump, no bad hops), outfield grass is like a fairway at a nice golf course ... and not a rock in sight. Even electric score boards. Nice concession stands.

Anyway ... you get the picture.

So before the game, he and I are talking. Nothing serious. Mainly about the girls, how their doing. And during a quiet moment, he mentions our local taxes. And surprise, he thought they are "too high".

And without thinking I said "yea, I can't imagine how much tax money they waste maintaing these fields ... when I was a kid, the fields were nothing but hard dirt with big rocks, and the outfields were nothing but crab grass. These girls have it way too good."

The look on his face was priceless.

63. Actually symptoms seem to be all they can tackle.
Cause is entirely too much. We find the same thing with some of the doctors we end up working with - too focussed on symptoms and not focussed on causative issues. Like your thumpers, they are too focused on simplistic prescriptive solutions.

Excellent post btw.

48. I'm so sorry your 'high and mightyness'.
As I say on occasion; I have 'class', I just don't always feel the need to use it.

Should suffromich decide to set the record straight, I'll be happy to apologize for my otherwise well-founded assumption. If, on the other hand, suffromich decides to 'keep me guessing', then 1) I will not have been 'guessing' after all. And 2) I'll know I'm not the one with the real 'class' issues.

You could help, however... what with your abundance of grace and kinsmanship.

Could you please explain just how, in relation to the OP, the post by suffromich is actually 'humorous'?

Yes, yes... I know that these people were anti-porn, and anytime the word 'porn' appears, it's just natural to reference any old 'porn' stereotype. I understand how 'classy' people can be like that. But I really want to know just why it's so gosh-darn chuckle-funny in a way that so obviously went over my head.

I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

What's it made of? Antimatter? Tachyons?

40. Suggesting I am a liar is not only against the rules,
But it says something telling about you.

The above did, in fact, occur. The location was Brighton Rd and Colvin in Tonawanda, NY. There is a Family Video there, and those two show up on occasion. You can drive yourself out here and look for them, or you can please stop being so very insulting.

I understand you don't tend to interact with the local wildlife, but that doesn't make everyone who does a liar.

Thanks for inadvertently helping to prove out my impressions.

59. I have no idea what you're talking about, but let me remind you
of Elmore Leonard's words: "If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it." This is especially true of dialogue. For future reference, Doc.

62. Stop insulting everyone's intelligence.
The insinuation is clear to those who don't feel the need to pretend to be so clever.

I'm sorry I didn't feel the need to format everything to your specifications.

Either way, you know what you can do with your insinuation.

35. So, would they agree that the reason rush and newt
got divorced so many times was because they sit around and watch porn all the time??
Just wondering................

50. Ugh
I have my own objections to porn. I have a theory that religion is the one of the root causes of sexual repression/damage and THE root cause of objectification of women, thus ugly porn that does degrade women, is actually part of religion-- Quite possible necessary or at least hard to untangle one from the other, since the whole duality thing, in this case, good/evil is what successful manipulation of people is all about. (Porn is actually and more simply, part of a corrupt multi-billion dollar industry, but bear with me here)

If they care so much about women, why aren't they down somewhere fighting for reproductive rights and family planning? Why aren't they escorting frightened women to Planned Parenthood because of the crazies who somehow have decided that PP is yet another evil entity? Why do they want to own our uterus's, in some cases leaving women to die so they can continue their fetus worship?

I don't know what your neighborhood is like, but mine is working class/mixed ethnicity. Yes, a bit rough--to a lot rough. I wonder if these good folks would be interested in protesting the clearly marked XXX porn shops down my way?

51. I don't get it. Without porn, people would have no other choice but to screw each other's wives..
children, farm animals, etc.

Wouldn't they?

Porn keeps people from doing naughty things with their penises.

57. Thanks for posting this.
I'm one of those DU'ers who runs from conflict. But I suffer from behaving that way. I was raised like that, and never grew out of it. I just keep to myself, even when I see stuff I could get involved in, like you did. Reading that gave me a sense of relief, and empowerment. I learned something. I really appreciate that you did what you did, and that you presented it here.

58. It's a pleasure.
It's just so fun to reveal that these people are total hypocrites devoid of any real reason.

Absolutely take heart and have no doubt that these people are without integrity.

65. Hardly.

This account is not up to some people's 'standards' apparently. And because I didn't tell it properly, it apparently didn't happen.

68. I think there's a brigade of them around here.
Every story must have "pics or it didn't happen" mentality.

One was about the shoddiness of an alternative(I think) school's lunches. And that one even had pics. :eyes:

Good on you! :)

72. I think it's kind of sad.
Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 03:21 PM by The Doctor.
These people obviously don't do these things. I guess I need to thoroughly explain that the account is comprised of only the core part of the conversation and that I did sometimes paraphrase where I couldn't remember the exact words. The bright folks apparently didn't need that explained to them.

For others, my 'style' just didn't meet their standards of authenticity.

I shouldn't feel the need to record my encounters, but I'm planning on it anyway for my own records.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that each and every one of them is too pusillanimous to do anything more than make insinuations like gossipy school-girls. Funny how I can be accused of not having class by such sorry actors. It's just sad that so many lack the courage to just come right out and say what they mean.

But, DU is full of those sort, and I've long since become used to it.

Thanks for the comments.

:hi:

If so, grow up.
