Even with Family, Republicans can't debate without being mean and calling names.
So, my husband's dad recently (last November) remarried to a woman who also has two grown sons. One of them today just starts going off about how much he hates Obama and if anyone thinks the bailouts have helped anything you're just stupid. I pointed out that the bailouts were being paid back with interest, and while they didn't FIX anything, the bailouts staved off a global economy, which leads to really bad things. He said I sure do speak pretty, just like my President. and that I might be more book smart than he, but I lack street smarts and common sense. I have met this guy on two occasions. We've had like one conversation, not including this crap. Then he told me to take him off my friends list. He hates the stuff that I post. I told him that I thought Facebook was about dialogue, and who ever learned anything in an echo chamber? I like reading everything and challenging people. That is what got me called stupid. Oh well. I guess being nice to his kids at Christmas a month after meeting them and showering them with presents doesn't count for anything. Douchebag.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.
Duckie

Faux news repeaters are better off left alone.

17. You are right about Fox news repeaters. Debating them is like debating a rock.
And when you finally cut up all of their bullshit claims, they get enraged and stomp away.

4. they know they are wrong, can't refute truth and can't admit defeat
so they mock, name call and a whole host of other things.

They pick on typing errors and looks because they don't have truth behind them

10. That sounds familiar.
My b-i-l calls himself a libertarian but he's really a Republican. For some reason he seems to think that the louder he speaks the more correct he is. He's a big part of the reason the rest of our mostly liberal family avoid him and my sister as much as possible.

11. Yeah, I got over it pretty quick.
Just gives me an excuse now to not have to go over to his mom and my husband's dad's house while all 5 grandkids are there. His son is my little dinner buddy. He entertains me the whole time. I bought his daughter her first Cabbage Patch doll last year for Christmas and she carries it everywhere she goes. It is just really sad he doesn't want to get to know me at all because I am a generous, bleeding Heart Socialist. People are so weird in this state. And sadly, he's the poster boy of men in this state for the most part.

15. You don't "dialogue" with Republicans
I've learned this the hard way with one crazy-ass mean MF uncle. I tried doing that for awhile. Finally, in a story too long to go into, I told him to fuck off and never contact me again. THAT he got.

19. Never expect anything in return.
Don't do anything nice expecting anything in return. The wife is not "family," she's your father-in-law's current wife. That's it until you develop a relationship, if you develop a relationship. Otherwise, just be nice to the kids and go about your business as usual. The FIL's marriage could end next year for all you know. Just do whatever you feel like doing as long as you expect nothing in return.

22. Some people are just self centered blowhards
Republican party is littered with them but by no means has a corner on the market.

My mother in law has voted Democratic all her life, supports unions, voted Hillary in the primaries. But she's a flaming bigot. The poor woman fell full on for the birther crap. 2 years ago she started spouting off and I involuntarily bust out laughing. I apologized and tried to be diplomatic and explain how silly the whole thing is but it just upset her more - she had a massive fit which ruined the rest of the visit. We ended up leaving early. Now that the birth certificate is out not one peep out of her but she's found something new to hate Obama for.

I feel your pain.

I'm saying it to you guys. I don't use it in discussions. I use it in venting to GD, which is what this place is for so I don't do it to those people's faces as it is happening.

25. To Republicans
other humans exist on a sort of plain, like an object they talk at...your job is to have a pulse, listen to them complain, blame, moan, go on and on, bitch, kvetch, and agree with them that they are a victim in all aspects of life, everyone they don't like is bad, etc. And, if you upset this world view by even questioning them slightly, perhaps pointing out that some of their life's problem just might be some choices they made, bad choices, or that their personality is causing them trouble they go absolutely bat-shit crazy on you.

You become the enemy to them, and they swim on, like an emotional Great White shark, looking for some other chum in the water to placate them. Hence, they tend to huddle together in solipsistic groups, like the KKK, Tea Baggers, etc. It is much more more-syntonic for them just to have other bags of protoplasm say, "Yes! You DIDN'T get that job because you're a (white) (male) (Christian) (whatever)!" and not, "Wow, Uncle X, maybe if you had taken advantage of the GI bill and attended some college, your career might have been a bit more satisfying." or, "Your wife left you because you're abusive, not b/c of women's lib."
