My Dad Is My Special War Hero.....
Edited on Sun May-29-11 09:50 PM by rsmith6621
In the summer of 1944 my Dad gave his Dad the middle fingerbird and left the family farm, went to the nearest U.S Army depot and signed up to fight in WW2. 10 weeks later he was on a ship out of Oakland CA. for a few months stay in Hawaii(classified at the time) to be trained in how to assist in the restoration the country of Japan and was soon on a ship to assist other troops in theater around Japan. In June of 1945 he was in the 1st Cav directly working under General Douglas MacArthur as a Quartermaster.

After the the double bombing of Japan and the surrender my Dad rode in to Yokohama Bay.General MacArthur issued my Dad orders and directions to set up a table with chairs and a table cover on the deck of the Missouri. The set up is in the image below.

My Dad passed away 10 years ago,he did not disclose his role in the ending of hostility's until 1989 when he showed us a picture of him in LIFE magazine. We gave him a military funeral and headstone placed in the local city cemetery. Tomorrow I will visit him and place my own flag on his headstone and tell him how much I love him and miss him....then I will thank him for his awesome service to defend our freedoms.

Thank You Dad....

3. These guys did not talk about their experiences
They did not ask to be glorified, they all came home and went on with their lives.

I have found my father has finally started to talk about some of his experiences. After he went on an Honor Flight, he has started to tell us some of his stories.

4. Dad passed away six years ago, age 92.
We knew he'd served as a DI in the Army Air Corps, but did not see combat because of his athsma. We were amazed when he casually mentioned, just two years before his death, that he'd been part of the team that developed the Norden bomb sight. We asked why he'd never said anything before and he replied that it was classified. He said that as far as he knew it hadn't been de-classified, but "By now, who cares?"

Silent as clams, those guys.
