Delaware civil unions law likely will boost Rehoboth Beach's economy

Even though Delaware's civil union law doesn't go into effect for another seven months, Rehoboth Beach's Chris Beagle and Eric Engelhart are not only beginning preparations for their ceremony, but for many others as well.

Because both have backgrounds in hospitality, the couple of 22 years has decided to start a wedding planning business, focusing on same-sex couples in the area planning civil union ceremonies after years of waiting.

<<<<<snip>>>>>

Just like a wedding for a straight couple, the spending is about to begin, adding to the $86 billion-a-year wedding industry in the U.S.

And since Rehoboth Beach is already a wedding destination and home to a large gay and lesbian population, the unions could be a boon for beach businesses.

I posted this for a reason - equal rights for same sex couples is something this entire country should recognize. But with this struggling economy, making this happen in the state will only help boost the economy. Although our state law doesn't go into effect until 1/1/12, I know a few gay couples already planning the big day here in Delaware and they plan to spend some big bucks on a lavish affair. That means more money coming for businesses that have struggled these past years with the shaky economy.
