Teen girl shoots dad with arrow for grounding her & taking cell phone
Police in Washington state have arrested a teenage girl for allegedly shooting her dad with an arrow after he took her cell phone away.

Mason County detective William Adam said the man told officers that his 15-year-old daughter used a hunting bow to shoot him Wednesday evening after he grounded her and took the phone.

After being shot, he allegedly had to crawl to a neighbor's house to call 911, because she wouldn't let him use the phone, KOMO-TV reported.

The man was airlifted from the rural, forested Tahuya area to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and listed in serious condition, according to KOMO.

15. Depends on where he was shot.
A well-placed arrow can do much more damage than a poorly aimed bullet.

And there's much less kick on a hunting bow.

91. I wouldn't bet on that.
It would depend on what point was on the arrow what I'd rather be shot with. With a target point, sure, I'd take the bow.
If there's any kind of hunting point on the arrow, I'd take most guns over it. At least with a gun the wound channel is relatively small. Broadheads make a huge wound channel, and some are barbed to keep the arrow in. As you move the arrow works its way around cutting deeper and deeper. (Barbs are illegal in most states, but not all.)

That little thing on the side is called a "bleeder blade" for pretty obvious reasons and the whole thing is a little over three inches wide. I'll take a bullet, thanks.

49. Whole lot more expertise necessary to fire a bow
I certainly couldn't fire mine to a level to kill by simply pressing a trigger. It takes practice to shoot a bow with enough lethality to kill.

89. Not neccesarily.
Getting shot with a hunting broad-head will lead to massive bleeding. A field-point would be more survivable (depending on placement) as long as it was left in place until medical care was available.

I wish they would have picked someone more ethnic for the part. Just the usual attempt to Anglicize characters in features, if not in coloring.

But they cast Woody Harrelson so it should be interesting.

47. Why do I bet
that there is much more to this story than just the girl being the guilty party?

I've used a bow before, and it isn't a weapon you use like a gun - you don't have "accidents" with bows - you use one because you willingly are after the target of said bow.

Anyone else that has ever used a bow or participated in archery want to chime in here? It's not an "accidental" weapon.

52. Yeah, that's the poster's point..
Shooting someone with a bow is a much more deliberate action than just picking up a gun and squeezing the trigger.

There's a non-zero chance that more than an argument over grounding and a cell-phone caused this event.

I'm actually kind of surprised at how many completely believe this story to be the whole truth and I've been on DU for quite some time.

You're absolutely sure that the whole story was told in the brief first report we all just read.

I'm cool with that..

But I'm not absolutely sure there's nothing more to it.

I was molested at about that age or a little younger and never told anyone until I was about forty.

It colors my perception of things quite a bit sometimes and this is one of those times..

It's over a hell of a lot more than just a cell phone to take such a dire route at "problem solving".

You are getting the father's story - she's a spoiled brat, etc. In this particular case, considering the weapon used, I'd tend to believe there is a lot more to it than cell phone privileges.

And haven't for about ten years. I just use my brain, and think for myself.

Think for yourself. A bow is not a weapon that is reactionary. It takes mental planning to use it. That was my point.

It wasn't a value judgment, it was an honest assessment of what is a horrible event. Perhaps you should look at your own self and your tv watching habit if you think someone making a valid point is like an episode of your favorite show.

60. Agreed - and that was my point
There is a hell of a lot more going on here than the story told by the police, et. al.

62. Update: shot in torso (not head), girl was despondent & has med. issue
Edited on Thu May-26-11 09:12 PM by Cerridwen
From other articles earlier today.

The father was shot in the torso; not head. After girl was detained/apprehended she was found to be "despondent with a serious medical issue."

One article says father only known parent; another says mother lives out of state. Father is one who says was because of being grounded and no use of cell phone.

Girl will remain in hospital until medically cleared to be sent to detention.

66. The girl is ill
And the father's only response is because he denied her cell phone usage, and plenty called her a brat.

When the kid is so damn sick that she's in the damn hospital, and uses a bow and arrow to commit a crime, I'm inclined to think there is more going on than just "denied cell phone usage".

But I guess I'm just using "tv logic" and not the rational perspective of a person that has actually hunted with a bow. No, it couldn't possibly be that the entire scenario sounded implausible from the get-go, it must be that *I* watch too much TV. Since I haven't owned one in ten years.

70. "despondent" doesn't sound like "hopped up" on anything.
None of the articles I've found have said what her medical issue is.

81. Please don't tell me about her mental issues. The headline w/o context confirms my prejudices
Any reporting of facts will only cloud the core issue here: that all kids are a bunch of remorseless spoiled brats and the world isn't simple and wholesome like it was when I was a kid in the 70s.

90. Sorry, Bucky.
I was mostly ignoring the other articles I'd found with the additional information but then I had a "SOMEBODY'S WRONG ON THE INTERNET!!!!1111" moment and I just *had* to post.

I blame it on the fact I spent the day peeling 40-year-old wallpaper off 50-year-old walls. I couldn't punish the person who 'invented' wallpaper so I decided to post here.

LOL

:hi:

84. BC it was a bow and arrow the headline does NOT say "discharged"
or "went off" or any of the magical self-firing phrases they use with guns.

Maybe:
- she was just cleaning the bow and arrow and "it accidentally discharged," because...
- she "didn't think it was loaded," or
- she "thought the safety was on," or
- the bow and arrow malfunctioned.

Absurd? and yet they say similar things about gun shootings all the time.

No additional word on daughter's medical issue.

The father is "on the mend".

<snip>

When airlift medics arrived, they made sure victim Tony Iovenelli didn't move since the arrow was still stuck in his side.

<snip>

"It was straight sideways, punctured his arm; it was parallel to his arm, right in his body," Dave Blackwood said. {Blackwood is neighbor whose house Tony Iovenelli drove to}

<snip>

Iovenelli said he ran from the house with the arrow still in his side and managed to get in his pick up and drive to Blackwood's home several doors down, asking him to call 911.

"So I went back and got my phone, came out, and I went to his window and he told me his daughter had shot him with a bow and arrow," Blackwood said. "I got up next to his truck, looked inside, and sure enough he had an arrow sticking out of the side of his chest."

<snip to a wee bit more at linnk>

From another site/blog, I found the girl's name and that she's an honor student. I hesitate to link to it as the same page of the article also has a video titled "Blame the Jews – Everyone else does"

Instead, I'll summarize and leave off some of the more colorful language; the daughter's name is Kirsten Nicole Iovinelli and she's an honor student at her middle school. She has a facebook page which is currently 'unavailable' and she's been charged with first degree assault. Oh, and there are pictures that I believe are of the father and the daughter.

As I said, still no word on her 'serious medical issues.'

103. Reading the different articles was enlightening.
Some mentioned her mother; most didn't.

A few mentioned her 'medical issue'; some didn't.

A couple of blogs went to town and added all kinds of crap not found in any of the articles; I have no idea where they got it from.

The names didn't come out until about two days later and the majority of the original articles still haven't been updated. If any of the reports were correct, she should have gone before a judge yesterday if she was medically cleared. I've not found any updates this morning.

No update at the brother's facebook page either.

101. What has happened to the US and parenting?
I would never have even thought about back-talking my parents, better yet shooting them with an arrow.

This is why I don't have kids.

My heart sank reading this.....
