Marmite made illegal in Denmark
The strongly flavoured dark brown spread made from brewer's yeast has joined Rice Crispies, Shreddies, Horlicks and Ovaltine prohibited in Denmark under legislation forbidding the sale of food products with added vitamins as threat to public health.

Many well known breakfast cereal and drink brands have already been banned or taken off supermarket shelves after Danish legislation in 2004 restricted foods fortified with extra vitamins or minerals.

But Marmite had escaped notice as an exotic import for a small number of ex-pats until the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration telephoned Abigail's, a Copenhagen shop selling British food, to ban the famous yeast spread.

"I don't eat it myself, I don't like it but Marmite was one of our best selling products. Not a day goes by without someone coming in and asking for it," said Marianne Ørum, the shop owner.

"All the English people here are shaking their heads in disbelief and say that it is insane. I agree but it is the law. It's becoming impossible to run a business in this country. We are not allowed to do anything anymore. It is the way Denmark is going."

1. That is bad. Really bad.
Free choice down the drain. I grew up eating Marmite, and had no side effects whatsoever.

In fact, I would say my good health was founded on healthy eating in my youth.

11. After being in the States
for a few years, we visited Australia - and on the Quantas flight they had little containers of Marmite like others have of marmalade, etc. I felt right at home.

My Dad used to like Bovril soup.

7. I'm really curious about the rationale for that one.
I also wonder what happens if a Dane fills their trunk with the stuff in Germany or Sweden and drives back.

15. The trunk is too risky
The only safe way to go is to have marmite "mules" who swallow balloons full of the stuff before crossing the border.

20. Well if they have determined these products are harmful, isn't this what we want?
I say that's more like the legislation we need here. Ban the sale of all the harmful products.

29. They haven't tested the products at all
They claim that too many vitamins are bad for children and pregnant women, so they say any food with any added vitamins has to be specially approved. This means, for instance, the recipe for Corn Flakes in most countries.

27. It's "Industrial" "Waste" because it's labelled so
Just as head cheese is considered waste to some people and a delicacy to others.

26. If so, it's ridiculous...
but I don't entirely trust the Torygraph on such stories. They are very anti-socialism, and have the same sort of attitude to the EU that American right-wingers do to the UN; and though their news reports used to be reliable they've gone down badly in the last few years.

I don't see how adding vitamins to food could in itself normally be a threat to public health (though vitamin A can be poisonous if taken in excess); and I love Marmite.

28. assimilate... or leave [Denmark]
..."Recent comments from the Danish immigration minister, Søren Pind, that foreigners should "assimilate" or leave, coupled with the country's recent unilateral decision to reinstate border checks, have left some residents questioning the motivation behind the crackdown.
