'Riders' return as heroes
Barbour apologizes to civil rights activists for mistreatment in 1961
10:12 PM, May. 23, 2011

Written by
Jerry Mitchell

Fifty years after Freedom Riders rode buses to change America, they have arrived to see a Mississippi much different than the one that hauled them off to prison.

On Sunday night, Gov. Haley Barbour thanked the riders for "your courage, your commitment, your sufferings and your sacrifices of 50 years ago. We apologize to you for your mistreatment in 1961, and we appreciate this chance for atonement and reconciliation."

The riders gave him a standing ovation.

I have always been and always will be a yellow dog Democrat, but I have to say 'Bravo', Governor Barbour.

2. In the context of the article, you really don't want to call yourself a Yellow Dog Democrat.
Since yellow dog Democrats were the Southern Dixiecrat racists who enjoyed beating on the freedom riders so much in the first place.
