Day-um! My calendar today has an Ayn Rand quote!!!!
"The purpose of the law is not to prevent a future offense, but to punish the one actually committed."

This quote, however, really shows the flaw in Rand's thinking, or, rather, her LACK of thinking. She is an ideologue whose views have no bearing whatsoever in reality...an obvious example is speed limits and traffic signs, used often enough to help drivers avoid problems. What a tool she is/was.

My calendar has had its day ripped off and now it's May 25 at my desk.

1. So if conservatives truly worship her...
they will have to admit the death penalty won't prevent murder.

2. My calendar has a Rand quote, too!
However, my calendar is the "365 Stupidest Things People Ever Said" calendar.

4. That sounds like a fun calendar. I expect there will be more Rand
as the year goes by. Can you share today's quote?

3. She is correct on that.

And I can site many examples of where thought police are wrong.

However what causes that is not a difference from private or public sector, but a security state, weather left or right, for control without justice.

The actual mechanics of thought police are to get you to fear even thinking about something, then you can never question anything, since the very thought to question, requires looking at things from many angles.

'minority report justice' is wrong.

You have to put Abraham in jail first if you are going to use that tactic. Since by the edicts of preemptive justice you would have to say he is guilty of killing his son, something he did not do. You would have to put every person able to avoid a trap in jail.

6. I think you misunderstand what she said.
I can't believe something as simplistic as Rand's quote can be misunderstood, but whatever. She is not saying that laws are there to punish thought crimes. She is saying that laws exist to punish crimes that already happened. I disagree. I think laws exist BOTH to prevent crime and to punish it.

5. That's an interesting philosophical quote.
I disagree with her view of the "purpose of the law." I think it's too narrow minded. Part of the reason we have certain laws is to prevent certain actions. The simplest example is speeding laws. We don't want car accidents that look like plane crashes. That's why we have speed limits.

Her quote is very unsophisticated, kind of like her followers.

7. That's my point...she makes very authoritative-sounding comments...
but dig just a little beneath the surface on them, and they don't hold up...again, reality quickly shows how wrong she is.

8. I don't understand how she has a following.
But I think that people that follow her are like her.
