1. As far as I'm aware
all of your oil goes on the international market. As such it becomes almost incidental how much physically stays in the US.

3. That is correct...
All oil goes straight to market.

4. Doubtful that domestically produced oil is shipped abroad for resale back in the US.
Oil is undeniably PRICED on the international market, however.

2. Here's a short article (also a video at the site).
Here's a May 3rd article from The Daily Ticker:

Despite the notion that the U.S. is currently hugely reliant on foreign oil, the country sold 34,000 more barrels of petroleum products a day than it imported in November 2010. And, in both December and February, the U.S. sold 54,000 more barrels a day. Net imports have not been negative for nearly two decades.

Part of this has to do with weak U.S. demand in recent years due to the recession. The other part rests on the growing demand in our own backyard for not only crude oil, but refined oil as well.

Mexico, Latin America and even OPEC member Ecuador are some of the U.S.'s top customers for fuel products, namely refined oil. Rising demand in these countries far outpaces their capacity to refine crude oil into petroleum products like gasoline or diesel fuel.

But, as Dan points out in the accompanying clip, this is not the only news item that hints at this country's ability to export energy to the rest of the world.

6. That article is not accurate...
Unrefined oil is still massively imported. The story is talking about refined petroleum products.

5. Here is a chart on oil imports and exports from the US Energy Information Administrtation.
Edited on Tue May-24-11 10:08 AM by PufPuf23
Note that this chart is not total production and use domestically but that the USA does export 2,000,000 plus barrels of mostly finished oil products a day.

One can research the EIA site for other statistics.

11. However, Alaska now supplies most of the natural gas that's used to cook Alberta tar sand for export

to China. And, for that, we can thank Sarah Palin for the half billion dollars she strong armed the Alaska legislature into allocating for the TransCanada gas pipeline that fuels the tar sand extraction operations in Alberta, most of which is now owned and exported by Chinese companies.

That's how Sarah earned her wings with the GOP, and a major reason why McCain chose her as his running mate. See, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/08/30/579990/-Palins-$500-million-Pipeline-to-Nowhere
