Democrats Try to Woo Consumer Advocate to Run
By JENNIFER STEINHAUER and BINYAMIN APPELBAUM
WASHINGTON — Officials in the Democratic Party are wooing Elizabeth Warren to run for the Senate against the Massachusetts Republican Scott P. Brown rather than have her continue to set up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
...
If she chose to run — party officials say she is intrigued but far from decided — she would emerge as the most high-profile contender among those currently in the mix. Others include Setti Warren, the mayor of Newton, Mass.; Alan Khazei, an entrepreneur who failed in a 2009 primary bid; and Bob Massie, an activist and minister.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee sees Mr. Brown, who won a special election in a 2009 for the seat that had been held by Edward M. Kennedy and whose victory served as the beginning of the Tea Party wave, as a key target because he represents a Democratic-leaning state where President Obama’s coattails could help the party’s candidate.
Mr. Brown has sought to navigate between Tea Party demands for ideological faithfulness and his state’s more moderate political sensibilities. Democratic officials say they believe Ms. Warren would be able to attract high-dollar donors. They also say she has improved as a politician by dint of the scrutiny she has endured over the last year. Matt Canter, the spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, declined to comment.
