AT&T SUCKS!
I switched from Time Warner Cable internet (7 mbps) to AT&T DSL (6 mbps) for what was advertised as $25 mo, half of what I was paying TWC. But pages don't load as quickly, or always fully. Ok, I can deal with that, I thought. Then, news comes that they will be capping my usage at 150GB mo with overage charges if I exceed that allowance. Maybe that's plenty, I don't know, but I was under the impression that I'd be unlimited. Am I supposed to watch Netflix in fear? Then my first bill comes - I'm being charged MORE than TWC. Contact them via chat - oh, the promotional credits will begin on the second or third bill. What? Why? For a company that advertises itself as the leader in cutting edge technology, why can't you apply the damn credits starting bill one, and let me pay what you said I'd be paying?! "Sir, your situation requires you call this number..." Really?! Why the hell do you even offer chat if you're just going to refer me to a number? I swear, the entire corporation is a labyrinth of incompetence. I've been with them for a month and a half, and feel a strong need to escape. Worst experience ever with an ISP!

2. Why do you think they put the cap on?
Because they want to stop you from streaming Netflix and force you to get a expensive TV package from them.

It's slow, outdated and they charge insane fees including overages. I'm switching ASAP.

31. I had Time Warner and was satisfied with it. Then Comcast took over the
franchise. I'd love to see open compensation on cable, telephones, Internet service providers, but our government gets to choose for us.

6. I dumped verizon for comcast. Comcast is definitely better in my area. FIOS is not available
from Verizon or I might try it. So, I pay more Comcast for better (not great) service.

8. I have had an ongoing battle with
AT&T for over a year. I got an Email from them about usage of my DSL. I could not understand it but I could understand one sentence in the email. They said if I called an agent and gave them grief they would cut off my usage permanently. I had written a pretty snarky letter to them about a year ago for overcharging me on telephone as well as DSL. If I could find some other way to get DSL I would.

12. I had exactly the same issues
This month I also signed up with them for U-Verse 6mb service (which in fact has a 250GB cap) for $20 bundled with my cell. I called them up and got the same response. I also (separately) got a mailing about the billing situation and promotions not applying on the first bill. Definitely seems sleazy, but I think I'll give them the benefit of the doubt this once.

And about the slow pages loading, google "changing DNS server windows" or "changing DNS server mac" or whatever is appropriate for you and enter 4.2.2.2 as the IP address you'd like to use. It's an open public DNS server operated by Level 3 communications, a major net backbone, allowing you to bypass AT&T's shitty server. It fixed my issue completely. Good luck, let's hope these promos kick in for us, I can really use it.

14. As soon as I find an alternative I'm gone
I could switch to Comcast but we switched from them to AT&T years ago because they sucked hardcore. That's it for me, there are no other viable options. I would crawl a mile through broken glass to get Verizon FIOS down here but they apparently have no plans to expand any further.

18. People should check their AT&T bills carefully for bogus charges
such as calls to 411 that you never made. They sometimes like to make "errors" and bill you an extra 30 bucks or so a month.

They are a terrible, terrible company.

20. Tried their U-Verse internet for a month or so.
Had Time Warner Cable with Turbo package and was getting 26 to 30 Megs reliably. Tried out U-verse, which advertised 24 Megs but for like 30 dollars a month less, which I found quite acceptable. The installer was courteous and proffessional, but the speeds fell short. The best I ever saw was 22 Megs...which would be fine...within the limits of reasonability of the claims, but more often than not, my speed was between 8 to 12 Megs...and the actual bills I got were higher than advertised. Help over the phone was too much of the "unplug this and plug it back in....didn't help?...well it's probably your house wiring..." type.

Went back to Road Runner. Blazing fast, but more expensive. I'm OK with that, since they deliver on their claims. Their customer service is good too. Once I put in a call for my internet being too slow and erratic one sunday. A tech was at my door to replace the modem that very sunday night. I was impressed.

The U-verse fiber optic thing is a good service, but they need to work out the bugs.

21. It's weird; I've never really had a problem with their service.
I've have their U-Verse television and their internet services for about three years now. Reliable, decent equipment, nice customer service, and nothing weird about their billing. Before I had U-Verse I had Charter Communications, which is the single worst cable company on this (or any other) planet.

The U-Verse DVR is to the Charter DVR as a Ford Pinto is to a Bugatti Veyron. Seriously, that machine was technologically ante-Diluvian and saddled with the most frustrating, unusable interface imaginable. While the AT&T DVR isn't as good as a Tivo (nothing is), it is superior to the Charter model by several orders of magnitude.

26. Gave $351,500 to the Tea Party Caucus
• AT&T was the top contributor — with a whopping $351,500 — to members of the House Tea Party Caucus, led by the extremist Michele Bachmann, according to July totals from OpenSecrets.org.(1)

• AT&T contributed to the Senate Conservatives Fund, which raised money for Christine O'Donnell, Joe Miller, Ken Buck, Sharron Angle, and Rand Paul — all backed by the Tea Party.(2)

• AT&T's political action committee was recently ranked by Opensecrets.org as one of the biggest political contributors in the 2009-2010 cycle.(3)

30. AT&T was also one of the corps that lobbied in Tennessee and got a bill passed against gay peoples
civil rights. Nashville’s civil rights ordinance was killed by AT&T and 12 other companies all members of the Republicon Chamber of Commerce chaired by Nissan Corporation who initiated, supported and lobbied for the hateful bill signed into law today, by Gov.Has been. The city that will be affected by the bill, HB 600/SB 632, is Nashville, which bans discrimination on the basis of sexual identity or gender expression.

Now that this bigoted bill (sponsored by AT&T) has been signed into law, it is not illegal to discriminate against citizens on the basis of sexual identity or gender expression in the state of Tennessee, so this new law renders Nashville's ban void.

Just one more reason to despise the AT&T bigots, haters and frauds.

Lou
