Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty formally announced his campaign seeking the GOP nomination for the presidency Monday morning, but by midday, his political past had already caught up to him. Reporting by Minneapolis City Pages' Nick Pinto brought to attention a pardon then-Gov. Pawlenty granted to a sex offender in October 2008, which is sure to haunt the candidate throughout his campaign: the man Pawlenty pardoned was later arrested again for molesting his daughter more than 250 times in an eight-year span, including six years prior to his pardon.

Jeremy Giefer served 45 days in prison in 1994 after being convicted of statutory rape. However, because he married the then-14-year-old girl and stuck around to father the child they conceived together, he begged the state for an extraordinary pardon, which would no longer require Giefer to report himself as a sex offender.

5. I don't know how powerful that pardon will be as a political tool...
against Pawlenty because I think Jeremy Giefer was only 18 or 19 years old when he was convicted of statutory rape.

Jeremy Giefer, accused child molester, got Pawlenty pardon to open childcare center

Jeremy Giefer served time in jail in 1994 for having sex with a 14-year-old girl. But you wouldn't know it to look at the record of the man now charged with sexually molesting his daughter more than 250 times over the last eight years.

That's because two years ago, Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Attorney General Lori Swanson, and then-Chief Justice Eric Magnuson unanimously voted to wipe Giefer's record clean, granting him a pardon extraordinary.

One reason Giefer wanted his record cleared? His wife wanted to open a childcare center in the house where they live--the same house where Giefer allegedly molested his young daughter throughout the six years prior.

Today we learned that Giefer told the Board of Pardons he wanted his record wiped to clear the way for a childcare facility in his home.

So what does the governor have to say about it? Not much.

Today Pawlenty sent a letter to the Blue Earth and Ramsey County attorneys expressing his shock that Giefer might have lied when he told the Board of Pardon's he'd been good, and asking them to look into charging Giefer with perjury.

"I am very troubled by the prospect that a pardon applicant may have been committing serious crimes while representing to the Board of Pardons that he was law-abiding," Pawlenty wrote.

Wow, imagine never thinking that a convicted felon might lie to get his record wiped. Incredible.

8. unless Republicans running against him use it
it probably won't get much traction because the media tends to poo poo Democratic candidates that negative campaign (negative campaigning being pointing out any fact the media is trying to bury).

11. The D party will probably avoid it,
But it will gather momentum on the internets. That'll hurt.
