Hoyer Reads GOP The Riot Act For Creating Enormous U.S. Debt
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/hoyer-reads-gop-the-riot-act-for-creating-enormous-us-debt.php?ref=fpa

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) offered an unusually blunt assessment of the sources of U.S. debt in a Monday speech before an audience of Republican and Democratic elder-statesmen -- calling Republicans on the carpet for creating systemic deficits, then holding U.S. creditworthiness as hostage to a highly contentious right-wing ideological agenda.

(snip)
"It is not tenable for us to hold ransom the creditworthiness of the United States," Hoyer said, adding that the GOP's negotiating posture "ignores that some of their own policies helped get us where we are today."

(snip)
These policies combined with the economic collapse that took place under President Bush's watch starting in December '07 are still the greatest drivers of our deficit.

Why else would some falsely insist that their agenda -- cuts to Medicare and other programs for the most vulnerable, and tax cuts for the wealthy -- are the only possible answer to our debt?

1. What do you expect, Steny?
Of course they've set the country on a ruinous path. Of course, now that the chickens are coming home to roost, they using the crisis to further their political ideology even more. Of course they're using hardball tactics, and trying to screw the system even more. They haven't exactly been shy about telling us that's what they want to do, have been doing, and will continue doing.

The question is: What are the Democrats going to do to stop it? Talking about it is a terrific first step. Keep talking, because you're about 30 years behind in this discussion. But then, fer the love of Mike, DO something, too. These maniacs are hell bent on crashing the country and its economy, thinking that they will be spared any adverse consequences. They haven't negotiated with Democrats on any of this, they've just been plowing ahead. Quit negotiating with these ideologues; they're not going to compromise, but they may be delayed. Start putting forward an alternative vision of reality, in which the country operates in the interests of more than just the wealthy.
