Swedish police uncovered CIA operation
Source: Svenska Dagbladet

No english language link for this yet (I'd be surprised if it ever came up in US media).

Translation:

Agents from the USA has under false cover been conducting counter terrorism operations on Swedish ground. The Americans were caught red handed by Säpo (Swedish Security Police). Sweden protested against the CIA and the Americans immediately fled the country. The incident has been held classified.

When Osama Bin Laden was tracked down and killed in Pakistan by the US three weeks ago it happened without Pakistan being informed. SvD can today unveil that the US also did operations on Swedish ground. Sweden has become the stage for a foreign power's hunt for terrorists, without the knowledge of the Swedish government.

This should not be confused with the normal surveillance unit at the US embassy in Stockholm that was uncovered this fall, or with leaked documents obtained through wikileaks.

What SvD can present today is so far completely unknown information about illegal American intelligance operations in Sweden. It was discovered by Swedish security police two years ago, in the first half of 2009.

this news in Sweden? Is there reaction in Norway, also?

Thank you very much for posting and translating that news article!

The same thing was uncovered in Norway, except that they used retired Norwegian cops to do it.

I didnt know if i could translate the whole thing, since the rules don't allow posting of complete articles.

8. Thank you for replying. As a U.S. citizen, living in the sword hand, so to speak, it's hard
to imagine how it must feel for the people in the rest of the world to always be on the blade end.

10. Relax
Geez. Ease up. That's what the CIA is supposed to do, though getting caught is usually not part of the equation.

The translation doesn't really provide a lot of detail.

Option 1: The CIA tried to recruit Swedes under a false flag, that is, not US. Okay. That's what the US is supposed to do.

Option 2: The CIA tried to recruit a non-Swede in Sweden under a false flag. Okay. Again, that's what they're supposed to do.

Option 3: The CIA tried to recruit a Swede or non-Swede as CIA. Maybe this one's on the edge, but this is what intelligence officers do. It's they're job. Some are good at it. Some are not so good at it.

Should they have done this with the cooperation of the Swedes? Maybe they do conduct operations in conjunction with the Swedes. Again, that's fine. But sometimes, for any number of reasons, that's not feasible. It's a risk, but, and I know I sound like a broken record, that's what intelligence officers do.

As for the fleeing part, that is, "the Americans immediately fled the country," my guess is that "fleeing" is a bit of a stretch. If they learned that their operation was compromised, the officers might have been recalled to Washington. I find it very hard to believe they would have "fled." Alternatively, they could have been declared persona non grata by the Swedish government and asked to leave.

I mean, really. If the Swedes were discovered to be spying on Latvians in the U.S., would anyone get really worked up over it?

18. You think the US government would be fine with
Sweden conducting covert operations in the US without telling the CIA or any US Government institution?

The CIA replaced the station chief in the Stockholm embassy after this.

21. Rather silly of them.
Sweden is the US's most loyal informal ally, had the CIA had anything remotely intresting it wouldn't have been hard to get permission for a joint operation - as long as the Swedish people were kept in the dark that is.

23. No doubt we will extradite the CIA criminals to Sweden for trial.
At least, I hope, Sweden will be as assiduous in seeking extradition as they have been in seeking it for Assange.
