After the first great disappointment, a myriad of new cults and religions arose
Shortly after the great disappointment happened in 1844, instead of turning to science, reason and freethought - the Millerites doubled down and went even DEEPER into crazyland.

The Seventh Day Adventists popped up about this time, also the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Although the Mormon Church was started around the same time as Miller's 'Ministry,' the number of congregants swelled afterwards with new converts.

As the Sagacious Sagan once said: You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.

1. Are you saying this is an opportune time to start my own religious cult?
I thought Scientology absorbed most of the recent nutball excess of the last few decades, but I suppose this would be more along the lines of disaffected Rapturists looking for a new home.

I can use Apophis as God's Judgement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis) as a good starting point for a new cult, if it misses Earth the first go-round I have an immediate fall-back date.

3. I would think so
The Church Of Jesus Christ, Asteroid

Or go in a wholly different direction: The Church of Bob Dylan :)

4. A good chance to start
... start a religion which (subtly or not) promotes critical thinking and economic justice. Of course, it would be a challenge to concoct such a thing. :(

2. Reminds of of certain posters that defend Obama's pro-corporate politices no matter what.
