WASHINGTON — A politically influential conservative group has begun lashing out at Tommy Thompson, even though the former Wisconsin governor has yet to officially declare his candidacy for the battleground state's open Senate seat.

The organization, Club for Growth, released a Web ad Thursday replaying President Barack Obama's Oct. 10, 2009, weekly address in which he cited Thompson as a supporter of the health care reform bill that Obama signed into law in March 2010. The 40-second YouTube spot concludes with the caption: "Tommy Thompson was a champion of ObamaCare. That means he's not for Wisconsin taxpayers."

Chris Chocola, president of the anti-tax group, said in a statement the ad was a precursor to "the TV advertising Tommy Thompson is likely to see if he runs for the Senate. Pro-growth conservatives just won't support someone who supported ObamaCare."

2. This makes an interesting story to show how far to the right
the Republican party has moved. I didn't live in Wisconsin when Thompson was governor, but apparently he was a big spending moderate. Walker is much, much further to the right than Thompson. And its only been 11 years since he was in the Governor's office.
