Pakistan says wants China to build naval base
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/pakistan/Pakistan-says-wants-China-to-build-naval-base/articleshow/8496915.cms

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Saturday it wanted China to build it a naval base, in the latest sign of moves to strengthen ties with Beijing as relations with Washington falter.

The announcement from Pakistan's defence minister came a day after Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani returned from a four-day visit to China, Islamabad's biggest arms supplier.

"We would be ... grateful to the Chinese government if a naval base is ... constructed at the site of Gwadar for Pakistan," defence minister Ahmad Mukhtar said is a statement, referring to a deep-water port in Pakistan's southwest.

The statement did not say whether Pakistan had asked China to build the base at the port in Baluchistan province.

4. Compared to PI
and Olongapo City, most liberty ports are sh&^y.

How many sailors have happy memories of crossing Shit River Bridge for the first time!

2. It's tough to be speechless about something I'm not surprised about.
But I am.

This article speaks for itself.

5. Literally.
It's to be at Gwadar, which has a port that the Chinese built. By "the Chinese built" I don't mean that the government handed over money for it, or the Chinese government planned it and contracted it out to Pakistanis. No, the Chinese government hired a Chinese "firm" to plan it, then contracted it out to Chinese firms who hired Chinese workers to go to Gwadar and build it.

They had some security problems, with militants (always foreigners, to be sure) trying to kill the Chinese workers.

Pakistan likes to play the helpless victim to advance its goals, while playing off rival powers in order to outwit and out tricks them by doing things like having truck with North Korea and developing an atomic bomb to defend Islam. It's worked so far--look at how far Pakistan's come, in 1948 it was more prosperous (per capita) than India, and now India's per capita income leaves Pakistan in the dust. If their goal is helpless victim, they're certainly making great strides towards it.

Pakistan needs enemies. It's how it defines itself. It also needs to be the trickster, in order to manufacture some self-attributed pride. It's the kind of thing that made the domination of India by Urdu-speakers win so many Hindu hearts and minds.
