The American Civil Liberties Union has weighed in on the lawsuit that seeks to overturn the state's domestic partnership law.
Chris Ahmuty, executive director of the ACLU of Wisconsin, says it was particularly important to file its amicus brief given that Gov. Scott Walker last week asked Dane County Judge Daniel Moeser to dismiss the state's defense of the law that grants limited protections to same-sex couples. In his motion, the governor also asks Moeser to allow the state to change its position on the registry and declare it unconstitutional.
"If the government isn't going to defend lesbian and gay couples, then those couples and their advocates have to stand up for themselves," says Ahmuty. "We're thrilled that Fair Wisconsin and other couples have been allowed to intervene, but are happy the ACLU could offer some additional help in this important case."
The ACLU brief was filed on behalf of the five couples who, along with Fair Wisconsin, a statewide gay rights advocacy group, and former Gov. Jim Doyle and two members of his administration, are defendants in the case............
