America is in the grip of a new literary sensation - a book of profane nursery rhymes designed to tap into the frustrations of parents whose children will not nod off at bedtime.

The 32-page book by novelist Adam Mansbach has the snappy title Go The Fuck To Sleep and was inspired by his daugher Vivien's failure to drop off at the requisite moment.

It comprises a series of verses that start out soothing, but quickly descend into rather more desperate exhortations to slumber. For example, one effort reads: "The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest / And the creatures who crawl, run and creep / I know you're not thirsty. That's bullshit. Stop lying / Lie the fuck down, my darling, and sleep."

It goes without saying that the volume is not designed to be read to chidren.

The book, which is illustrated by Ricardo Cortes, was due to be published in the autumn by Akashic Books, but the date has been brought forward to June after a PDF version of the book found its way onto the internet and went viral.

Like the parental units who told me emphatically that "saccharin tastes just like sugar" since they yelled at me for putting lots of sugar in my tea. Saccharin is bitter as hell. That's all they had for artificial sweetener back in those days.
