Mattawan preparing to pink-slip its entire teaching staff this week

MATTAWAN — Mattawan Consolidated School is preparing to issue layoff notices this week to all its 207 teachers, although it appears the district would eliminate 20 positions at most once final budget decisions are made, Superintendent Patrick Bird said.

The layoff notices and the district's budget issues will be discussed at tonight's board meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the administrative offices.

The layoff of 20 teachers assumes no retirements and no contract concessions, Bird said.

Mattawan is facing a $4 million deficit for 2011-12 because of state budget cuts and rising expenses, Bird said.

Mattawan officials are planning to use $1.5 million in their fund balance to reduce the deficit to $2.5 million. The remainder will need to come from either laying off staff or reducing compensation, Bird said.



Gov. Rick Snyder's budget calls for cutting K-12 funding by $300 per student. District also are losing another $170 per student in federal stimulus dollars, plus their contribution towards the state school employees retirement fund will increase sharply in 2011-12.

The combination of all three factors will costs Mattawan about $2.7 million in 2011-12.
