SHELTON, Conn. (NBC) -- Hundreds of thousands of people had been pulling for James Tate to be able to go to prom after he was banned over his creative prom invite, and it worked.

On Saturday, headmaster Dr. Beth Smith overturned the ban.

The two people at the center of the prom controversy said the response they have been getting has been positive overall, quite surprising and they are ready to go on with their lives in a more private manner.

"I think this has been blown completely out of proportion," Tate told Matt Lauer on the Today Show on Monday. "But it's cool."

1. That headmaster ought to drag herself into the 21st century.
Creative prom invites have become a big deal for teens. All that kid did was cut out some large cardboard letters and affix them with tape to the front of the school where the girl he was asking would see them when she arrived. He did not deface the school in any way.

Headmaster needs to lighten up. Wonder if she's attending the prom as a chaperone. If so, she'll probably have a heart attack when she sees how the kids "dance" these days!

2. He was trespassing, actually.
But he has apologized and offered to clean any tape adhesive off the wall.

Just learned today that he is donating all the money given to him for fighting this ruling in court to children's charities and scholarships.

He looks like a really nice kid. He's an AP student heading to Syracuse University in the fall.

From now on they will examine such infractions on a case by case basis...

4. Technically yes. However, I suppose the same goes for me when I
walk the track of my local high school (along with many others) after hours. He obviously didn't think he was doing anything wrong.

I hope he has a great time at the prom.

5. Kids are kids, they make some dumb decisions. He's obvously learned from it.
He sounds pretty level headed, plus his parents seem very nice. When you think about it, his dumb move didn't involve speeding in a car or drinking or taking drugs. Putting up a sweet little invite to the prom on the front of the school is kind of endearing when you think about it...

6. Yep, that's what I think, too. I'm glad the
headmaster reconsidered. The punishment definitely didn't fit the alleged "crime."

7. If this is the worth thing he ever does his parents ought to be damn proud!
You'd think he held up a store or was involved in a damned home invasion. The headmaster ought to have her head screwed back on.
