Some educated women choose prostitution
Some educated women choose prostitution

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark., May 15 (UPI) -- Prostitution is illegal except for a few areas of the United States, but some educated women work in the sex industry by choice, researchers says.

Jennifer Hafer, a doctoral student, and economics Professor Amy Farmer of the University of Arkansas say contrary to conventional wisdom that women enter prostitution because they are desperate -- they need money to pay bills or buy drugs -- many educated and affluent women are making a rational decision to enter certain segments of the "world's oldest profession."

However, the research confirmed women do not explicitly choose to become streetwalkers.

"The findings suggest that these women are not forced into the prostitution market but rather choose to enter it for many of the same reasons that people enter the conventional job market -- money, stability, autonomy and even job satisfaction," Hafer said in a statement.

1. This isn't a surprise, of course.
Just like it's not a surprise that sometimes wives beat their husbands. It doesn't take away from the fact that the majority of women in prostitution need help seeing alternatives and getting out.

3. Sophisticated sex workers are not a new idea.
Through the centuries select women have become educated in more than sexual skills in order to please their partners. Critical thinking skills and knowledge provide the basis for becoming a confidant of the man.

It's an interesting report. I wonder how satisfying sex is with their soul mates or committed partners after several years in the sex industry? (That is a question I ask, not a judgment or sarcasm, etc. I'd like to know if it affects their relationships.)

10. Given that "exotic" dancing has that effect, I would certainly think the answer to that question
would be "Yes".

5. Good!
I like a little good conversation after sex. Then, it's off to sleep with a smile!

6. Read about this in one of the Freakanomics books...
She was the other side of the bell curve from your average street walker.

Educated, healthy, drug free, entirely on her own etc.. etc... Consciously choosing when she wanted to get out.

7. This reminds me of the ancient Greek hetari.
hi-class prostitutes who were also some of the few highly educated women in Ancient Greek society. One was a friend and lover of Pericles.

13. It goes both ways. Lot's of people go about relationships in a pragmatic way.
Sex, status, resources. Men seek these things as much as women do.

18. Wouldn't you consider a "gold digger" prostituting herself?

Look at the celebrity old-man-young-girl marriages. Do you not consider that a form of prostitution?

Howard did not say "all" traditional relationships. Just some.

21. gold-digging is definitely prostitution.
But then, I define prostitution as offering sex for non-sexual ends. By that definition, most people are prostitutes.
