29. As part of the coverup, the husband accepted an illegal lobbying job

Ensign's paramour's husband, Doug Hampton, had been Ensign's chief of staff. Ensign fired him, but, in an attempt to ensure his silence, browbeat a private company into hiring Hampton as a lobbyist. Hampton then called Ensign's office on behalf of his new employer.

As Ensign's former chief of staff, Hampton was barred from such lobbying for one year after leaving the government. It was within that time period that he engaged in the lobbying, which was therefore illegal.

According to Rachel's report, the Senate Ethics Committee wanted to immunize Hampton to get his testimony, but the Department of Justice refused, because of the case it already had against Hampton.
